There are boards with dislike buttons, incidentally. Click any of the articles [here](http://littlegreenfootballs.com/), scroll to the bottom, and observe the plus and minus buttons. I used to vociferously object to the Like button for reasons given. I’ve lowered my intensity somewhat after spending too many hours on twitter. I come back here, read a decent post, and get a muscle spasm as my hand jerks towards a nonexistent like button. It’s a habit. Personally I think the board should try a clap button like they have at [medium.com](http://medium.com). You get to press it more than once! Pair it with a raspberry button and issue automatic warnings to people who press it outside of the pit: raspberries are insults doncha know. Implement this during one of the board’s periodic lost weekends and enjoy the hilarity. Oh, if only vBulletin had these sorts of features! ---

Take it from me, I’ve discovered through personal experience with Facebook that the “Like” button can be like the button mice push to get a food pellet. You become conditioned to do it every time you want to send out a “warm and fuzzy” to the recipient. It’s very easy to use it to death. I’ve actually found myself “Liking” long posts that I actually didn’t have the time or inclination to read in their entirety just because I wanted to send out a “warm and fuzzy” to a friend. Ridiculous! Besides, if something truly impresses me, I should be able to take the time and make the effort to verbalize why. Otherwise, “Liking” becomes little more than “ass kissing”. ---

There are “like” and “share” buttons for the SD columns. E.g., right now the [blood pressure](https://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/9051/how-credible-are-the-new-blood-pressure-guidelines/) column has 98 likes and 650 shares. (Vs. a measly 58 and 143 resp. for my [fatberg](https://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/9131/is-the-fatberg-apocalypse-upon-us/) question.) There’s also counters on the front page that reads 30 and 186k (!) resp. but not sure if that’s for the home page or what. The imbalance is odd. I guess people like to share more than they like to like. ---
