Pick something a little more appropriate? It’s not just this one episode. Alabama was also the center of the Ten Commandments debacle and just recently voted against repealing segregation. I’m well aware that not everyone in Alabama is an intolerant, ignorant redneck but the concentration seems to be above average there. I apologize for any offense, though. It’s not fair to smear an entire state for the actions of a vocal minority (at least I hope it’s a minority). ---

On one hand I’m irritated by people who combat bigotry and ignorance like Allen’s by stereotyping Alabamians. OTOH, as somebody who is moving not just to Alabama but to Allen’s district in three weeks, the word “FUCK! FUCK! CLUSTERFUCK! AND MIGHT I ADD FUCK!” to this story. ---

NOW you deprive me of the opportunity to claim that **everyone** in Minnesota is a total, 100% jerk. 90%, maybe? **VampyChick** , there’s a thread in GD about the vote on the amendment and Alabama’s constitution in general. People don’t seem to want to accept that “NO” is the default vote on any amendment for a large percentage of the population. Maybe it’s one of those “see to appreciate” things. I haven’t seen new results on amendment 2 after the recount. I saw that “yes” picked up a few hundred votes in Lee County, but Lee voted 2:1 “yes” anyway. ---

Though I was irritated by the 2000 initiative on removing miscegenation laws from the Constitution, I do have to add one thing in my home state’s defense: while it passed by only a slim majority, the _wording_ of that initiative was _extremely_ confusing with much legalese and vaguness. I remember having to read the piece several times myself in order to figure out “Alright, if I vote ‘Yes’, does that mean I’m saying we should or shouldn’t remove the miscegenation laws?”, and at risk of sounding immodest I probably have better reading comprehension skills than most voters. There’s no telling how many people (on both sides) voted the opposite of their convictions due to the confusing phraseology. ---

What you say is very true, **Sampiro**. The only way to vote Alabama amendments is to get a sample ballot a few days ahead of time, take it home, pull out the magnifying glass and study. I’ve talked to many people over the years who found out, after an election, that they had “voted wrong” due to the wording. Sadly, most don’t go to all the trouble, they simply vote “no” on everything. I’d guess that there is an average of six proposed amendments on the ballot every election, even the mid-term elections. It’s a bummer! ---
