When I was in eighth-grade English, we were diagramming sentences (do they do that anymore?) and one of the sentences concerned “woolly-headed natives” I thought that was odd and racist, and that was in the 60’s. ---

I’ve probably seen Elf more than a dozen times, and I like to see myself as just shy of a bleeding heart liberal… and I never, ever made any especially negative connection to “cotton headed ninny muggins”. I certainly never raised any eyebrows over it. ---

Sure enough, some on-line dictionaries do give both definitions. Ignorance fought This came up many, many years ago when I was in college and the college president used the term in the sense of muddled thinking. It caused quite a stir as people thought he was referring to nappy hair ---
