I’m not speaking as a moderator here, but as a Jew. And I’d like to suggest that people refrain from sarcasm in threads like this. Jokes are one thing, jokes are fine, but unlabelled sarcasm is something else. So, go ahead and joke, but remember that these stories appear because they have (a) governments and people in power who want to keep the masses ignorant, aimed at the Jew as devil rather than focusing on their own misgovernment, bribery, corruption, and inability to better their condition; and (b) masses of people who are ignorant and are kept ignorant, who believe the propaganda. It’s way easier to believe that all your problems (social, economic, etc) are caused by some “foreign devil” than to focus on changing things, on corrput government officials, on yourself. (That’s not limited to the Arab masses, BTW, we’ve got plenty of Americans who believe that all the problems of the country are due to Mexican immigrants, for instance.) So, please, jokes but not sarcasm. ---

The tide of public sentiment is turning and The Young People are slowly effecting change. My uncle makes frequent trips to Iran and he has some very funny stories about young women in Levi’s and halter tops whose chadors “slip” off and blow open (oops! That naughty wind!) when they walk down the street. He had a heart-to-heart with a cab driver about the liberalization of Iran. The cabbie told him an allegory about driving a boat down a river; about how you can try your best to steer the boat to one side or another between the banks, but ultimately the current determines where the boat will go. They’re not pulling down statues and firing off guns, but Iran desperately wants to Westernized, and they’re willing to give up religious intolerance and misogyny in order to get it. **Back on topic** : Even though Iranians consider themselves more European than Arab, if they want the rest of the world to start making that distinction, they are going to have to cut out this shit in earnest. ---

In all seriousness, Zev…what do you expect? We’ve been a whipping boy for a long time in certain quarters and I don’t see any real notes of change on the horizon. The best we can do is combat the ignorance and not let our guard down. I admit, as one of the more isolated jews in the US at the moment (town: 12000+…jews (near as I’ve found) 1) I’m feeling a certain sympathy these days. ---

Well, I understand. But it’s merely a sign of ignorance run rampant…and the vested interests of certain powerful persons/bodies in maintaining an easy ‘hate target’. Honestly, until the others are dealing honestly we won’t be making any progress on this issue. Although I really DO wish they’d realize that if we controlled the media, government, military, etc we’d have just advanced Jews to openly running the world.
