I once lost 10 over the course of the summer quite unintentionally and several people noticed it, even though I didn’t realize I had lost weight until I jumped on a scale after the comments. It was quite nice. \*\*

Well, it was nice the first time (when I came home that thankgiving) but when she kept harping about it all through the year when I know positively that I didn’t lose any more weight (doctor visits each time, the only way I ever know my weight anyway), the bloom wore off. It was like she was commenting not on how nice I looked then, but how bad I had looked before (to her). As I said, after the inital drop, no one else saw a difference and my clothes all fit the same (still do, a year later). It was the constant repetion that hurt, not the particular words.

My favourite comment from my manipulative grandmother (whom I loved very much, and who didn’t get away with pulling any nonsense with me) was: “Well, you never did want to look pretty, did you?”

Um. Gee. Thanks.

In that case, wouldn’t it be that Karma ended up biting Grandma in her \*\*lack-of-\*\*bony ass?

I’ve always been heavy. I remember one day my normal sized cousin and I were playing together. She was eating a candy bar and her grandmother came in and said to her “if you keep eating like that, you’ll end up looking like Laura.” To say I was hurt would be putting it mildly. But I did get my own, quiet revenge. She used to eat Thanksgiving dinner with us every year, and every year I’d make up little place cards of where everyone would sit. This meant that when I let our three dogs eat off her dishes, I was sure they were her dishes 🙂

My grandmother manages to combine the sweet grandma and the evil old bitch.

When I visit her, she always, always runs down the list of junk food available. “There’s some ice cream, some egg rolls in there, some candy…”
On and on. The last time I saw her, I finally broke down and asked “Do you have something in a cookie?” (Yes.)

Whenever I talk to her on the phone and mention food in even the most tangential way (“Oh, we’re going to order pizza and rent a movie”), she always follows it with “Don’t eat too much, you’ll get fat.”

Extremely annoying, but I’m sure she speaks from experience, having spent years sprawled in her armchair with her hand jammed down a box of Cheez-its.

Her response? “Well, you don’t need to sit there and eat pudding for breakfast.” I thrust a handful of yogurt at her face and said “Yogurt, you bitch, yogurt.” The I packed her stuff, put her in the car and took her to the Holiday Inn.

What a scream of a story. I’m in Houston too; we should get a beer.

Anyway, it’s sad when grandparents are like this. You sort of expect parents to pick and nag at you (because they think it’s their job), but grandparents, aunts, etc. are supposed to spoil you.
