Sitting here listening to a great horned owl [hooting](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4CRqJJW6S8) away - TV is off and I have the window open slightly and the only light is my laptop. The cat is sitting on the window sill looking out intently.

Sometimes living out in the ass end of nowhere can be nice.

We just moved to our new house (seriously, we moved in today) and it is lovely. We have a gorgeous view of the water and everything. Everything including some Canada geese hanging out on the water, judging by the honking. But we have had way, way worse neighbors than some ruffled geese so we aren’t complaining!

I’m in a similar situation living 7 miles outside a smallish town. At night I can hear owls and other night birds like wipporwill. There are train tracks 6 miles North and I can clearly hear their horn at night.

I was wondering if it moved closer to the house because the eagles nest got knocked down in the last good snowstorm of last winter, so the top end raptor turf was open - I know the chicken coop is probably pretty attractive. If it won’t hit a chicken, it probably is interested in the rodents the chicken feed attracts. We have a pretty good squirrel and chipmonk population but the barn possum keeps mice under control.

I feel your pain. Last night, a horse just wouldn’t stop whineying. This country life, it really sucks. 😃

Reminds me of something my brother told me some years back. He went to visit a friend who’d just bought a new McMansion in a fancy-pants community. It was a summer evening, and they’d made their way out to the back deck. His friend paused and said “Listen… Isn’t that annoying?”

My brother said about 4 houses away, someone had a bug zapper, and he could hear the occasional _bzzzzt_ when a moth got too close. Yeah, what annoying neighbors they were.

I heard what I think was an owl the other morning (we live in the boonies.) It was not a happy sound - do they sound angry when they confront prey? It wasn’t a sound of suffering - something out in the dark was definitely pissed off!

We heard raccoons the other night. They were _very_ loud. I mentioned that they were either fighting or fucking. Listening a while longer, we both agreed; fucking.
