Non-Judeo-Christian Views on Gay Issues

I recall an episode of Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, the one about Walt Whitman visiting the town, in which Sully speaks of American Indians being tolerant of homosexuality. The Indians referred to their gay brethren as something I can’t remember the words for. (Maize?) Does anyone know if there is any truth to this, or is it just Hollywood BS?

“Maize” is corn, and I will not make the obvious jokes.

It has been my understanding that in some Native American tribes, homosexual men were considered a “third sex,” and treated as shamans, or spiritually blessed. I do not know which tribes, or the details, but will try to cite some sources if I can find them.

Oh Esprix, I knew what maize is, I was making an obscure reference to an old TV commercial. Only us old-timers would have gotten it.

I found the term I was looking for – “two spirit people.” (I get absolutely nothing done at work anymore.) Here is a link for more information. www.peak.sfu.ca/the-peak/99-1/issue5/spirit.html

There was a “two spirit” character in the movie Little Big Man. I assume that character was in the book also. I do not know if the portrayal of this character was accurate. Anyone know?

i only oppress those damnd durty left handers

the only thing i could care about homosexuality is why? the best arguement for why it happens that ive heard is personal choice

and another thing those people that get in your face like oh say “ask the vegan guy” i find that to be annoying

Heaven…One to beam up!

Perhaps because these three are the only three with anything from the one true God, and all others are man or demon inspired…

Heaven…One to beam up!

And this has to do with a thread entitled “Non-Judeo-Christian Views on Gay Issues”… how, exactly?

If you want to expound your impeccable logic, do so in another gay thread - there are a myriad to choose from.

yeah sorry

Oh good point, Royal Bill, I hadn’t thought of that. With so many religions out there giving mutually exclusive teachings, each claiming to have a monopoly on spiritual truth, it’s nice to have a good objective yardstick that will sort it out for you. Whichever god persecutes homosexuals the most, that one must be the One True God.

Demonically tolerant,
Your Quadell

Goodness! I had no idea the religious marketplace was so competitive! Does this kind of stuff go in their brochures? “Roman Catholicism: We’re Not Just For Paul Anymore!”

royalbill, I sincerely hope that my sarcasm meter was just acting up when I read your post.
SqrlCub, wouldn’t the Wiccan Rede pretty much cover the question of homosexual acceptance? I can see where it might get more complex when it comes to the adoption question (are they harming the child through social stigma etc.) but otherwise I would think it would be included in “harm none.” Thoughts?

I always try to do things in chronological order.
