Exactly. Anu-la1979 told us that THE correct term is ‘desi’, and I was indicating that any ‘correct term’ depends on where you are and who you’re talking to. And was implying that using the term in Britain will mostly result in
Celyn, in the part you highlighted, I was responding to Lust4Life’s comments, not GorillaMan’s post whatsoever. I HAVE had the terms dothead and Paki hurled at me before (also nigger, spic…take your pick, I’m ethnically ambiguous looking) and I reserve the right to think that people who use them are total cocksuckers, just like I think people who use words like nigger and spic are total cocksuckers.
Dothead refers to the use of sindhoor by Hindu women to indicate their marital status/and or references the bindhi a lot of South Asian women wear, generally when they’re dressed up.
I read GorillaMan’s comments just fine-the term is more well-known amongst people of actual South Asian origin. I never said it wasn’t, nor do I expect people who are not South Asian to automatically know/understand it. I merely put the term out there, because it’s what many many many South Asians call each other out of expediency. No kidding there are synonyms for it, isn’t it pretty much given that there will be? I never said it was the end all and be all term everyone is constitutionally required to use, my gods. You can refer to the individual by their country of origin (Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lankan), asshole, their ethnic community WITHIN their country of origin (Marathi, Mumbaite, Guju blahblahblah), slutty facebook noob, “oi you!”, Sanjay/Priya/their name, “damn kids” etc. And on top of that, a non informal name for the inhabitants of South Asia as referring back to the OP (hence my contribution to this thread) is desi.
No it is NOT alright, nigger is a word that is ONLY used in an offensive manner and intentionally so.
And as to the absurdity of your so called reasoning"replace this with that and that with the other" well I’m frankly amazed.
If you replace Bus driver with cocksucker and tennis coach with motherfucker then anytime you ride a bus then you’re being deliberately offensive to the driver"hey we all know what you mean when you say bus driver".
And dont book any tennis lessons because you’re calling the person teaching you an incestuous pervert.
Sorry but if you’re having to grasp straws like this to try and justify your position then I cant honestly be bothered to reply anymore.
Sorry mods I hope I haven’t crossed the line with those comments.
I can’t believe I’m bothering to spend time dealing with such an absurd and meaningless analogy, but hey…both ‘nigger’ and ‘paki’ have become extremely offensive words through their repeated use as, or as part of, racial slurs. You’re welcome to carry on denying this, should you wish, but that doesn’t make it untrue.
The posts below yours should help bring things more up to date for you, as to why “Paki” won’t just “do” because it’s a handy short way to say a word.
Just to say that I don’t know who Spoons is hanging out with and to echo Sunspace and featherlou, if anybody is using “hoser” for Canadians in any frequency at all in the last 15 or 20 years it’s big news to me. I hadn’t really heard it before Bob & Doug McKenzie were taking off for the Great White North, and I haven’t really heard it since.
Oh yeah, and I don’t really mind being called a Canuck, but that doesn’t seem to be used a whole lot either. When I was in Ireland a couple of months ago my national status seemed to be, "No,I’mnotAmerican,I’mCanadianactually’.
Are you by anychance calling me a cocksucker anu?
If so I would suggest you reserve your insults for the racists out there who actually call you nigger, spic, dothead etc. rather then someone who is defending a perfectly innocuous word that has been demonised by the stupidly overzealous Political Correctness industry.
Remember that those people who walk around with a permament chip on their shoulder are likely to receive hostile reactions from the people they meet.
Not because of their ethnicity, skin colour, religion etc. but because they’re jerks though it makes a good alibi for those who are unable to lookat themselves objectively.
Oh yes those people were cool to me because I’m black,English,a Methodist whatever and not because I act like an arsehole with people.
Maybe you should try taking a good long hard look at yourself and see if you are one of these people ,who knows maybe you’re not.
Personally I genuinlly despise racists and consider them to be one of the lowest forms of life.
Just above them in the lowlife table are those who blame the results of their own character defects on racists, fascists, sexists, ageists or just about anyone as long as they dont have to blame themselves.
What innocuous word are you talkig about, Lust4Life? Are you still talking about Paki? Just because you personally find it an inoffensive abbreviation doesn’t mean everyone else sees it that way. Why the hell would you insist on referring to a group of people using a term that they - with good reason - find offensive?
I’m curious why, as a non-Asian, you consider yourself in a position to dictate to Asians what terms are and are not offensive to them.
I completely forgot about the general dislike towards the English. There is definitely a strong sense of nationalism in Scotland.
The last time I was in Scotland, I remember graffiti that read: God Fuck the Queen. A few steps down the road the graffiti read: God Save the Queen. I also noticed the Pope was fair game for expressive Graffiti. Doesn’t this all tie into the sectarian Catholic/Protestant rivalry? Even the soccer teams have a religious affiliation.
My mother was raised Catholic with plenty of Pagan superstitions thrown in to make her really interesting, but she is agnostic or more likely a closet Atheist.
For racist arseholes the word Jew is used as an insult because they hate Jews but other people use the word Jew non perjoratively.
But the word Jew hasn’t been banned.
If a racist hates an ethnic group it doesn’t matter what term or title they use they still feel hatred and contempt to the subject of their xenophobia.
Personally I’m sick of people who seem to go around in life deliberately seeking to be offended, whether this has anything to do with the rise of the Litigation cultureI dont know.
When people try to make into" racist" words and actions that aren’t actually racist then they undermine the credibility of those people who genuinlly report racist acts against them.
Its all too easy for the general public to start taking the attitude that the latest report of racism is merely another attention seeker crying wolf when in fact the poor sod may well have been the subject of serious racist bullying.
I also dislike the rather unpleasant tactic used by those professional "Ethnic Victims"who lacking any sort of tenable argument against those who dare challenge the absurdities of Political Correctness system by trying to tar their opponent with being a racist themselves.
Bully Boy tactics may work on some people but not on me.
Those who use Fascist tactics to silence people they cant answer logically are just as much Nazis as Hitlers vile crew,no matter what their skin colour is.
American business associates at a job I had some years ago, who were often in Canada on business and who knew of Bob and Doug McKenzie, and who’d loudly exclaim about the hosers they saw when we were out socializing after work hours.
I’m mostly American Black with some 'pino mixed in. None of my family finds the “'pino” term offensive.
(I capitalize the “b” since I’m referring to a group of people - this is what I like, so please “English-Rules and Regulations People”, leave me alone)
Just wanted to point out that this isn’t actually right. It appears that black people call themselves or each other “nigger” all the time without anyone taking offense.
Its all about the intent of the speaker, reread my post about Irish Republican attitudes to Brits.
If I hate French people for example(I dont by the way)and every time I and my group of sick little Nazis say Frenchman it is followed by cunt,bastard,S.O.B.etc. then it doesn’t make the word Frenchman a term of abuse in its self.
I sometimes wonder if some of the terms that are supposed to be offensive are actually “discovered” by white P.C.s,Iremember in another thread someone saying that they actually called themselves Indians and found the term Native Americans rather silly.
Personally as a native English speaker I’m curious as to why any P.C. clown can demand to have a non offensive English word deleted from public usage.
Does it give them some sort of a thrill maybe?
Look at the power I have!
‘Paki’ has been banned?
Nobody is claiming that by avoiding using a term which many people find offensive, you’ll be destroying racism. So why suggest so?
Victims of racist verbal abuse are ‘deliberately seeking to be offended’?
The word ‘paki’ is not and can not be ‘racist’ by itself, and nobody has claimed so.
If we’re supposed to be ignoring the offensive perceived in particular use of language, what will this bullying consist of?
“Professional ‘Ethnic victims’”? I’ve lost you, completely.
Hi, Godwin!
I don’t even know why I’m bothering to argue against your absurd logic, Lust4Life, but let’s try this one more time.
Some people do take offense at the drop of a hat. I know certain Asian Americans who dislike being called Asian because such a term ignores distinctions between being Korean and being Japanese, for example. Personally, I don’t care, and I do think it’s ridiculous for people to be offended by things like this.
But there are certain racial terms that have a history of being used as pejoratives. The word Jap, for example, was used during WWII as an unmistakably derogatory term. Or the word chink - one might argue that it’s simply a diminuitive of Chinese. You can argue all you want that such words are not inherently offensive. You’re right; they’re not. But throughout history, they’ve been commonly used - not only by individuals, but by society - with the explicit purpose of degrading those groups they refer to. They are no longer neutral words, and they can’t be used as such. It’s not the same as using Jew or Asian, because both of these terms can be used neutrally (although they can also become insults depending on the context, I suppose).
What exactly is so hard to understand about this?
Well yes …but when whites use it I think its pretty fair guess that they’re not using it in the spirit of good will.
But yes you are correct on that.
Now there’s irony for you.
<mod>
Checking into this after a tip from the OP, I agree that this has degenerated into less of a “non-offensive” names thread into a “let’s see how offensive we can get away with” thread.
The OP requested that this thread be closed. I will honor that request.
