Remember Pat Morita? When he did stand-up, he was billed as “The Hip Nip”.

Something completely different comes to my mind when I hear the word “nip.” But then, I have a very dirty mind. :o

And yes, I do know about the wartime use of “Nip.” It’s a contraction of _Nippon_.

I always liked Sulu’s line in “The Enemy Within”:

\*\*SULU: \*\*Temperature’s starting to drop.

**KIRK:** At night it gets down to a hundred and twenty degrees below zero.

**SULU:** That’s nippy.

> Cannola Oil is naturally made from the seeds of the cannola plant which used to be called rape. I remember when I was young hearing about rape seeds. Apparently their still called that in some parts of the world.

This isn’t strictly true, rapeseed oil has a high erucic acid content and wasn’t used for cooking in the US because of that. Canola oil was made by breeding rape plants that had a lower erucic acid and is the specific name for low erucic acid rapeseed oil. The company did rename it partially to get rid of the ‘rape’ in the name, but also because it’s a different oil that is considered food-grade in the US. By the FDA’s definition, Canola oil is rapeseed oil that has a erucic acid content below 1%, while rapeseed oil in general has around 30%.

As well you should, because the name of the cookie pre-dates the racial connotation. People were called “Oreos” because they resembled the cookie, not the other way around.

The word might also be an alteration of Czech pulka “half,” for the half-steps of Bohemian peasant dances. Or it could be a merger of the two. The dance was in vogue first in Prague, 1835; it reached London by the spring of 1842.

In Germany in the early 1930s, a lot of Communists voted for Hitler on orders from Moscow (since, the reasoning went, it would be easy to get rid of him once the moderate parties were out of the way).

They were referred to as “Beefsteak Nazis,” since they were Brown on the outside but still Red on the inside.

I missed this post the first time around.

Funny thing about conguitos is that their creation was inspired by the news of the independence of Belgian Congo (nowadays the Democratic Republic of the Congo); the cartoon is of a pygmy because several of the ethnic groups which fall under the “pygmy” umbrella are from that area. So on one hand ok yeah, that’s a cartoon black person, and it refers to a colonial concept, but on the other it’s as big a case of “no offense intended” as I can think of.

There is apparently a brand of chocolate-covered biscuits made in Spain called ‘Filipinos’. This caused a minor diplomatic incident, with the Philippine government lodging a protest, as it was perceived to be racist since they were brown on the outside and white on the inside. (Notwithstanding that there is also a white chocolate version, which are white on the outside and brown on the inside.)

In France, Spain, Portugal and the Nordic countries they are produced and sold under the 'Artiach' brand name. Under license to United Biscuits, in the Netherlands they are sold and produced locally under the Verkade brand. They have drawn controversy for having the same name as the people of the Philippines.

Same color on the inside, actually, a sort of yellowish beige: the internal cookie is the same, the chocolate covers are different colors. There’s at least brown, black (well, darker brown), white and brown with white decorations.

Ah. Since Filipino biscuits aren’t found in the Philippines, or anywhere outside some places in Europe for that matter, all I had to go by are pictures from the Internet where the internal cookie appeared to be different colors.

These guys have even registered the [http://www.filipinos.com/](http://www.filipinos.com/) domain. I’d say the Philippine government has a stronger case for some sort of trademark cyber-squatting dispute.

> IIRC, Neal Stephenson claims in Cryptonomicon that “Nip” was almost the universal term used by servicemen in the Pacific, while “Jap” was used “back home” and by servicemen in Europe and Africa. I’ve never verified that, but it’s always made a bit of sense to me.

My grandpa, who served in the Pacific during WWII, used both terms plus “chink” for any Asian person. He also liked to pull his footlocker out once in a while and show us grandkids his collection of “Jap teeth” and a bayonet – he claimed these came from Japanese soldiers he personally killed (dubious, in hindsight. I don’t think he ever set foot off a Navy vessel).

We also grew up with “n\*\*\*\*r toes” for Brazil nuts and something similarly racist for those little black, anise-y bears (can’t remember what the term was). Many of my family members, buried deep in the rural West, still use these terms and it’s a shock to hear these terms in the 21st Century

Aunt Jemima’s Pancake Mix and Uncle Ben’s Rice had some really racist packaging back in the day.
