I checked and there aren’t any fires nearby. Where is this smoke smell coming from? It’s definitely wood smoke, not like from a barbecue gone wild or anything. My son, who lives about 50 miles north of me, said it was getting smoky there today. There are fires east of here but over the pass and then some. It doesn’t look that bad outside. I think I’ll slip out for a little look-see–just in the complex. I don’t see well enough to venture farther. ---

Aaaand I’m back. Holy smokes (Ha!), it smells like the middle of a campfire out there. Now I remember this exchange with my son: Me: Huh. It doesn’t look smoky here. Son: Mom, you can’t see past the trees. True. Their house is on a hill, and they have gorgeous views of Rainier and various peaks. Whence this smoke? California, is that you? Also, and feel free to throw this in my face any time: I am frickin’ nuts. I can’t see in the dark even in the complex. I know this. I have a strong tendency to think of stuff I can’t do as _challenges_. It happens often in winter, when we get less than 9 hours of daylight. “I can walk home from the store in the dark!” I tell myself, then wander around the parking lot 15 minutes because I can’t see the exit. And I do this _ALL the time_. There’s no _whoa_ in this Nellie. Should be, though. ---

I’m well over 1000 miles away from the California fires, and while you can’t smell the smoke here, you can see the haze in the sky caused by the smoke. It’s also made for spectacular sunsets and moonrises lately. ---

I’m here. Sleep has been intermittent in general. None yet tonight. My cats are funny about it- I guess their default preferred sleeping place is their cat tree, which is in the other room. But they come RUNNING the second I’m awake, I guess as soon as they hear me stir, and take their places- my girl under my arm, my boy on my chest, both purring madly. They’re both here now, although I don’t know what summoned him. I heard her feet hit the floor right after I said something out loud to him (“You wanna see the window? Here.” My conversations with my cats are exciting and profound.) so I assume it was the sound of my voice for her. I have to be up around 7. Oh boy. I should shower now and lay out clothes for the morning so that it’s just a little less to do. Not that clothes are that serious/complicated. It will be jeans and whatever t-shirt is on top and either the socks that make it look like I have robot legs or the ones that make it look like my legs are being eaten by sharks. I’ll do that. And if I’m not asleep by, say, 3, I’ll go ahead and do morning cat care as well. ---
