Hi to my fellow Dutchies gum, Tusculan and Single Serving Friend from the movie Fight Club, right?
Years ago, I bought one of Cecils books, translated into Dutch (!), at a sale (unwanted, apparently ) and liked it.
Two years ago, I Googled something, came out here, and immediatly bookmarked it in fond memory of the book. I searched the archive first. I hesitated to join the board because I thought I would have to get all technical doing so. Then I got drawn in through Threadspotting, read Wevets thread"odd little habits you have" and was hooked.
I was on a course from work about how to set up messageboards and the teacher mentioned this place as a good example.
I’m expecting to see him at a Dubdope one of these fine days
I have no idea what Straight Dope means, or who Cecil is, I found the MB via a link on another MB in a thread about “what other MB’s do you post on?”. 38 SWF Ireland.
Going by the response thus far, I’d seem to be an oddity: a foreigner who got here precisely because those are the site’s roots. While British, I spent several years working in Chicago and the Reader was a regular part of my life there, with Cecil’s column on page 2 the first thing you always turned to. I even saw Ed Zotti speak about the Dope at the annual Dearborn Street bookfair one year. Since I’d missed the Reader after I’d left the city to return to the UK, it was really only a matter of time and the spread of the internet before I eventually had a look for their website …
I was sent the link the the blimp story too, then spent the rest of the evening exploring the MB. After only ever going to British equestrian MB’s that have more rules than you could shake a stick at, the SDMB was (and is) the bees knees!!
