Non-western business ethics. What tells non-western businessmen to behave honestly?

Gross hijack :-}

@Jjimm, did you go to Uni at your current location ?

I refer you to my comment about accidentally accepting the tacit assumption in that post that the practices were “good”. I certainly know what I think - which is to us, our ethics and practices are indeed good, but not to others - and believe that I have been consistent in expressing that, bar the acknowledgement of error in my previous sentence. Though clearly not well enough to satisfy the people who are up in arms against something I don’t actually believe and haven’t said.

FRDE, no but my dad was a lecturer.

To escape the religious hijack, I have always read that America and other western cultures have a “guilt culture”, while Japan and many other Asian countries operate on a “shame culture” - one is individual, and the other is associated with the group. Comments?

Well … prior to 1980, in the UK people considered it ‘shameful’ to close a factory, then it became seen as a ‘smart move’. I can’t cite, but I was watching it at the time.

I reckon that there are multiple business ethics within all societies, people do not always practice what they preach.

I’ve noticed that in some societies, ostentatiously displaying the results of bribery is totally accepted, yet one can find the same thing in some sectors in the UK.

@Jjimm - thanks - the moral relativist bit got me thinking.
