NOOO!!! SDMB blocked at work!!

Are those of you with business PCs limited users or administrators?

Yes actually. :frowning:
It’s a laptop, but I don’t think I want to fuck with the corporate policy.

Why does he need the fax line? Just an internet capable USB plug-in unit from a cellular provider will solve his problem.

msmith537 I assume congratulations are in order? Weren’t you recently unemployed?

My last employer had a “reasonable use” policy, meaning if you used the Internet for personal business or pleasure–to a point–it was OK.

For many businesses or jobs, it doesn’t make sense to be too strict about this. I’ve gotten solutions to work problems on this message board, and elsewhere on the internet.

 My work has Amazon and Paypal blocked. But not youtube, myspace, or anything else that I’ve looked at. And theoretically eBay is blocked, but I just around it by using one of the subdomains. Which is odd, since my boss now has me making an eBay store.

The wonders of having no IT department.

I was responsible for getting it blocked at my last job. :frowning:

This was a call center job, and between calls. Somebody saw me reading a thread that started SFW and turned into NSFW, and I was turned in. I got in big trouble, nearly fired (but only written up as I was a good employee and had no offenses of any sort for anything.) and told if it happens again “on accident” notify your supervisor right away.

The next day I came in and the board was blocked.

That’s one of the few fringe benefits of working in the IT department - completely unfiltered net access that the peon’s don’t have (well, if they were smart enough to configure the gateway and knew its address they could have it).

It’s cheaper.

My office is unblocked. We are lightly watched. IT is WAY too busy for someone to sit and pay attention to what people are doing, but I don’t doubt they could go back and look if they had cause.

We did get a memo asking people to lay off the webstreaming, where the director of IT said the office as a whole was eating up too much bandwidth, and asked us to tone it down because he didn’t want to “be a jerk and block youtube.” Apparently the request worked because youtube still works.
