Unless the peak has yet to arrive, this seems like a lot of sensationalist fearmongering. Internet service is fine, my cell phone has not exploded and cell service is fine, wireless internet is fine, my tablet is fine. I haven’t bothered unplugging anything. But we may still have another day to go before the alert is over.
Here’s a thread that just opened about this very subject: Any reason to be concerned about CME’s this weekend? - #7 by Aspenglow
Auroras (aurorae?) do appear in southern Ontario from time to time. I saw them a few times when I lived there.
They are not the brilliant green draperies that you would see farther north. From southern Ontario, they’re kind of a dark red, and not bright. In fact, they are dully-coloured. They can easily be mistaken for clouds, but they don’t move like clouds do. They really do dance.
Keep looking up at night. You’ll see them eventually.
Incoming G5 solar storm. Not unrelated. Critical infrastructure operators have been notified.
Gifted NYT article:
Quite visible here in SW Minnesota – even from my not very dark back yard (I have a street light across the street from my front door) even from the front the NL are quite visible.

Thanks for that gift link to the New York Times – there’s some very impressive images in that article of the solar activity that created the CME! This giant thing that we orbit and that gives us light, warmth, and life is a pretty damned amazing phenomenon of the universe.
I should also mention that one of our resident airline pilots, @Richard_Pearse, posted some beautiful images in the General Aviation thread a short time ago, taken from the cockpit of whatever he was flying at the time, high up in a clear sky. Gorgeous!
I still see nothing here, but I’ll keep looking once in a while. It’s partly cloudy, but not completely as I did see a couple of stars looking towards the north. There’s a sort of dim glow near the horizon but that’s most likely the lights from the park and tennis courts a few blocks away. Damn city lights – things might look different out in the country and under clear sky.
We’ve got a pretty bright orange/red glow in the northern sky here in North Georgia.
Raining here.
It’s only 9.20 here. Not dark yet.
They were visible from South Carolina tonight. I didn’t see them (too many trees, too much light pollution) but friends and relatives on Facrbook are posting their photos. As far as I can recall, this has never happened in my lifetime.
I’m actually quite excited and hopeful! Despite having lived in northern Northern Montana for a few years and visiting Alaska a time or two, I’ve never seen the Northern Lights. It’s been on the bucket list.
We’re forecast for clear weather over the next few days, I have a pretty good view to the north and the night is virtually moonless. Fingers crossed!! Just starting to get dark.
Not dark yet. Going to bed.
These were all taken tonight in South Carolina within 10 or so miles from me. Like I mentioned, I don’t think they have reached this far south in my lifetime.
WOW!!!
(Stupid Discourse!)
There are reports that they can be seen in Memphis. It’s partly clear. I don’t have a view of the horizon but I can see a little higher than that between some trees. Nothing yet for me. I’ll keep watch until 2 a.m. or so.
I’m in Edmonton, in central Alberta, and they’re supposed to be directly overhead right now. I can’t see, of course, since it’s still cloudy. It’s supposed to clear up soon, and as soon as my wife is done watching hockey we’re gonna drive about an hour outside town to see if we can get a good view.
I went looking for them a bit north of Durango, CO, but no luck.
Sky was pretty overcast, and I think we are too far south, but I saw someone post a great photo from Arizona, so I thought it was worth a shot.
The northern sky through the clouds was suspiciously bright (there are no significant towns in that direction), but I don’t think that counts.
Best to watch in full screen so as not to get overwhelmed by chatty trolls.
Thanks – it was cool to see the aurora live streamed. There is still nothing here, but from weather reports and the blank look of the sky, I think it’s pretty overcast right now.
The Charlevoix/Traverse City area sure got a nice show! One of my Facebook friends posted pictures from her backyard. As with someone else who lives outside Des Moines, they were visible even before it got completely dark.
Me? I drove out of town, and didn’t see anything except some light pollution.
