Fuck paper straws. They got soaked into uselessness before you were halfway done with your drink.

Now, _real_ bendy straws I miss. Sure, they’re still around, but not the solid ones that click loudly into place. Also, McDonald’s straws made of soft, supple plastic.

Those missing candy dots might be able to find them in the Kosher section of their supermarket.

For a while, Jif made a peanut butter that had chocolate in it. That stuff was Nirvana. I used to buy huge jars of it at Sams. I could have lived off the stuff. And suddenly, it was gone. Same with name brand unfrosted cherry Pop Tarts.

Also, for several seasons Suave had a chocolate body wash. I would buy 20 bottles every Christmas and would use it the rest of the year. It was great. They haven’t had it for the last two Christmases, though. They have a peppermint this season that I love: hopefully they’ll have some left when I go to spend my Walmart gift card.

I haven’t thought about these in years; good one!My favorite thing to do with them, though, was squish them down around the bottom of the straw so when you took it off you had a kind of accordioned worm looking thing and then when you dropped a bit of water from you straw on it it"grew".

I also remember Koogle with the koo koo koogley eyes. My brother and I thought it was a laugh riot to refer to the Jewish dish _kugel_ as koogle.

Hershey bars wrapped in folded foil, then in a paper sleeve. Not sure why, but I liked those better than today’s all-plastic sealed wrapper.

Wow, I didn’t realize they got rid of that. That’s weird.

I miss solid steel beer cans that you had to open with a church key. You knew you were a man when you could bend one of those cans double, using your thumbs as a fulcrum.

I miss having to use a key to open a can of sardines; and spam.

I totally agree. There was something almost ritualistic about that two step unwrapping process. Carefully slide the paper wrapper off in one piece then unfold the foil. If you couldn’t eat the whole thing you just folded the foil over and it stayed closed. No linty bits in your chocolate later. The new plastic wrappers seem cheap and mundane by comparison.

For those who missed it earlier [here](http://www.oldtimecandy.com/candy-buttons.htm) is a site where you can order the little candy dots on paper, wax lips and all kinds of other retro candy in singles or by the case.

[Here](http://www.hometownfavorites.com/searchprods.asp) is another one.

Neither of them have what I’m missing, though. The original Whatchamacallit candy bar. I used to be crazy about them when I was little. They added a layer of caramel to it in the 80’s and it’s been inedible ever since. Blech. Why can’t they leave well enough alone?

When I was in middle school we’d stop at the mom-and-pop store and get not only candy dots on paper strips, and Sky Bars, but root beer Popsicles. Only had them in the summer of (mumble mumble) and they were so good on a hot summer day.

It’s not a ‘thing’ but can I mention playing in the snow? Getting all bundled up and getting out there in a winter wonderland? I still do it, of course, but it’s not FUN any more. Going down the hill on a flying saucer is one thing. Shovelling the stuck car out of a snowbank is another.

Not familiar with the Jif, but Skippy has a chocolate-infused peanut butter. It’s quite good.

I am 43…

I miss the comforting sound of someone slapping the bottom of a glass ketchup bottle.

I miss the milk box on the front steps. We never lost balls and other small outdoor items (like street hockey pucks), because they were always tossed into the insulated box on the front steps. Was a great place to sit when waiting for someone to come by, too.

Local BBSs. I’m nostalgic about them but I remember abandoning them as soon as I could to post to whichever Usenet-type thing was available.

The nostalgia stems from how easy it was to win a debate and the scary knowledge that the person you were baiting into a big flaming tizzy could easily figure out who you were, look you up, and come by to slash your tires or something.
