> Go to Izzy’s downtown and I guarantee you’ll see people putting mustard on their potato pancakes. I’m also fairly sure you can order them with sour cream or applesauce, but I don’t recall them coming with anything. I think that’s between Sixth and Seventh on Sycamore, but I might be off by a block or two.

Just checked, it’s Elm Street not Sycamore. And they do list applesauce but not sour cream as a side, although I’d still bet you can get sour cream (I’m a mustard guy). Here’s a [link to the menu](http://www.izzys.com/menu.htm).

> **Taters** … thanks for backing me up on the applesauce thing, I was beginning to feel isolated in my upbringing. I suggest to all that you visit our little corner of the world for Oktoberfest, where all manners of German delicacy can be engorged upon. Sausage, beer, potato pancakes, beer, deep fried dough with powdered sugar, beer.
>
> BTW **Taters,** has your daughter started looking at colleges yet? My little 8 year old is fixated upon becoming a Marine Biologist, and is looking at colleges to study at. Yes, she’s 8, and has her entire life planned out around becoming a marine biologist, all by her own doing. She scares me sometimes.

The daughter is 15 , in the 9th grade, and is stressing mightily over the proper classes to take to get into college and whether we’ll be able to send her or not. I had a thread a couple of days ago about it. I’m almost positive the University of Washington has a program, but we need to check into it. I admire her drive, she’s very goal oriented. We will, of course, check out as many options and schools as we can. I’d prefer for her to stay in the state (less cost), but we will do what’s right for her.

Last night’s trip to the high school put her somewhat at ease, but I told her to make an appointment with a guidance counselor. She is planning on doing that. If she doesn’t, I will.

Did you also grow up eating bratwurst and sauerkraut on Christmas Eve and then having the big Christmas Goose on Christmas day? I miss my mother’s rouladen and sauer braten as well. Mmmm, mmmm, good. Then there was the homemade spaetzli (I even have a press for it), potato dumplings and bread dumplings. I also liked liver knoedel and grusnuckel (I can’t spell it, but that’s how is sounds) soup. Mmmm, it was all so good.

**Taters** , can you find an actual Marine Biologist or two for her to talk to? If so, help her prepare interview questions in advance and use the opportunity to really find out what a marine biologist does. She should understand that she’s not likely to end up balanced on the nose of a dolphin at Sea World or swimming with Orcas (although she could). Ask what they do in a typical day, how they chose their line of work, what they might do differently if they were preparing for school today, etc. Beyond giving her a real grasp on what they do, it might inspire her or ease her fear of being qualified enough. Maybe. But at least she’d be making an informed decision. And she might make some contacts where she could start to get some extracurricular stuff that would help her make the cut for getting accepted in a program.

Mustard on potato pancakes? Yuck. Sour cream for me, thanks. And a side of bacon and maybe a montreal smoked meat sammich with swiss cheese. What you ignant Americans call ‘pastrami’. 😃 There was a very good Jewish deli near college. I miss them. And I miss their sugar cream pie.

No, I don’t weigh 400lb, why do you ask?

Just finished _A Letter of Mary_. **merrily** , I’m not impressed by that one. Not a complicated enough mystery. It only took a couple of hours to read, though.

I saw _Princess Mononoke_ on Saturday. Good movie. Very creepy in spots.

mmmmmmmmm - I found a good recipe for potato pancakes on line, and that was supper. I had them with sour cream, my slightly warped other half had syrup. He has strange eating habits, but I’ll probably keep him.

So I have a very happy tummy now.

> What a weird weather day! It stated out rainy and in the low 50. By 9:30 or so, it was snowing and blowing like crazy. By 1, the snow had passed thru, but it was still windy. It’s now 3:18 and blowing like mad, but the sun is out, and everything is drying, although there’s still snow on the grass and it’s in the 30s.

We had thundersnow this morning. And I wore shorts after work yesterday…

Well…this has been a very educational MMP: chickens on leashes (I would never have guessed they’d be raised that way for cockfights), Christopher Moore, snausages, and potato pancakes with … mustard? Never heard of that one, but I’ve heard of both applesauce and sour cream as sides (I like both). I’m sure I’ve missed stuff because I’m sleep deprived.

I’m having campanelle with a tomato cream sauce for dinner. Bought the campanelle solely because I’d never bought that shape of pasta before. Based on the name, I suppose they’re meant to be bell-shaped, but they really look like little rolled up curly lasagne noodles.

I get to drive 2 1/2 hours to Cleveland tomorrow to give a one-hour presentation…and then there’s the 2 1/2 hours back. At least they’re feeding me.

I should figure out what to have for dinner. I just cleaned and bleached down the kitchen, so I’m reluctant to cook. It looks too pretty to mess up!

Probably leftover curry and rice. And, since I didn’t go to dance class because it’s cold, I will have stretching and weights for dessert. And maybe dance a bit. I hate stretching. I’m the least stretchy person I know.

I haven’t seen their new movie, but now I have the _Ghost in the Shell_ theme- _Home Stay_, by Yoko Kanno- running through my head.

Ooooh! If those little chickies are being raised for fighting, I may have to fire up the old eco-activist (not to be confused with eco-terrorist) deep within me and pull a PETA and free them! Bad, bad, bad! Cruel! Icky! I hope it isn’t legal to raise them here in Oregon (I know they can’t fight them here). Of course, if it’s not legal, the owner can’t be too concern, considering that he placed them in plain view right next to a moderately well travelled road.

**Taters** , my old home stomping grounds includes one of the best marine biology programs in the country–Humboldt State University. I know, it’s out of state and so more expensive, but it’s cheaper to live in Arcata than near UW, so it may work out about the same. Humboldt State is a much smaller university, and some kids like that in a college. My sister is an alumni (alumnus?) and still involved. When your daughter is ready for college visits, let me know and I’ll get her to arrange a great visit for you. She’d love to do it, believe me, she lives for that type of thing.

Potato pancakes with mustard? TRAVESTY! Applesauce and sour cream for me.

Potato _knish_ with mustard, though… yummmmmola. I found frozen knish and have been snacking on those rather more frequently than is advisable. They’re made by a company called Gabila, which means that every time I buy them I sing the Magilla Gorilla song for the rest of the day.

When VunderKind was 5 or so, my FiL had him convinced that those hay and straw bundles were really dinosaur poop.

To hijack my own post, we bought his airline ticket today so I can see my kid on his spring break. 🆒

I won’t be seeing my kid for spring break. She was trying to get her bf to get his driver’s license (dunno why she always winds up with non-driving boyfriends) but then he decided he couldn’t afford to miss that much work. And she’s not going to drive all the way here herself, which I’m glad of.

And she waited too long for me to get her a good airfare, so… poot. Maybe we’ll see her this summer.

Well spoil my day **Kalley**! I was dreaming of a world with giant marsmallow fields and chocolate rivers and well, there may have been a hard rock candy mountain somewhere in my day dream. Can you tell it’s week two of the ol’ diet? Down three pounds, whoop de hoo.

Oh, plus I was wondering about Arcata. I’ve always wondered if it was a spiffy place to live. I like big trees, rain, am hippy friendly and conservative tolerant. But is it really small with not even a chinese food restaurant and only fifty kids attending the only high school in the county? Because a girl’s gotta have standards and a way to earn a paycheck no matter how good the hiking may be.

Also **Lissla** , another weird thing I’ve wondered about is using bleach to clean things. I don’t do it because I get this feeling that bits of bleach will be lurking about the kitchen and jump out to make a spot on my clothes. So I use 409 or whatever and spritz with Lysol if I’m feeling germ phobic. Do those of you who bleach to clean get spotty?

**Local woman in hospital after freak "pecking incident"**

March 10, 2005 - Local farmers rescued a voluptuous young woman from an almost certain death as she was acosted by scores of young roosters. The roosters, who are sold to breeders throughout the Pacific Northwest, were tethered to barrels to keep them from hurting each other. The woman, who has not been identified, was said to have “huge tracts of land”. She apparently was under the misconception that the chickens were being bred as fighting gamecocks.

Sheriff Landunne said that the young woman was suffering from massive trauma to the backs of her legs as the ribald roosters chased her around the field, pecking at her calves and feet and occasionally attempting to mount and breed with her. She is not in serious condition but is dazed and confused. Hospital officals say that she is merely being kept for observation over night, just in case she lays any eggs.

When we were kids, my dad told us that they were growing telephone poles in this field near our house. They were actually just testing the impact of weather on the poles. Of course, every time I drive by the telephone poles in that field now, I tell people with me that they are growing telephone poles.
