@urbanredneck2, I’m very curious where you came up with this article.

I’d bet good money it’s from a right-wing source. Less than 24 hours ago this exact article was posted to a teacher group I’m a member of, with similar “WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THIS TERRIBLE PROPOSAL?” questioning going on.

So where’s this from? Is this from Tucker Carlson? Is it something linked to from a Fox News blog? Did Breitbart post it recently? It’d be real helpful for you to let us know how this year-old article just came to your attention.

Here’s what I said in my teacher group

This headline might leave the wrong impression. Some important points:

-This is from 2019, which is at least 50 years ago by my count.

-This isn’t for all schools: the total budget was 1.3 billion a year.

-“The legislation would award five-year grants of up to $5 million total to school districts to implement programs in elementary schools serving high numbers of low-income families. The grants aim to fund programs that would allow the schools to provide academic, athletic, and enrichment opportunities to students during the extended hours.”

-"The new policies would not require teachers and staff to work longer hours and would ensure they are compensated fairly for any additional hours they do choose to work. "

To summarize: it’s a proposal to pay for staffing for after-school enrichment programs for districts that can’t afford to provide these at no cost to low-income families.
