I visited a trench . . . once. And it was for much less than twenty minutes. And it wasn’t with a Yale prom date, neither. . .

But I’m wondering how much salt in the Marinara trench would be enough to cover my ‘bathyscaphe breadsticks’.

You’re not reading carefully enough. Bush clearly has not visited the Marianas Trench, looking for WMD. Nor has anyone done so on his behalf. Because, after all, man has visited the deepest part of the worlds oceans, Challenger Deep in the Marianas Trench, just once. In 1960. For 20 minutes.

But Bush may well have \*thought \* of looking in Mariana’s Trench for the WMD. In 2004. For much more than 20 minutes. Though probably not.

And wrong you are! As anyone who has ever worked a television remote knows, no matter how much time the setup may require, teardown _never_ takes more than an hour! Been there, done that. _Quod erat deathrayatus_

Where do I sign the petition in favor of covering the earth with 500 feet of salt? I _tired_ of raking leaves, dammit.

I’m not sure I’m understanding this thread at all.

What you’re saying is that if Pete Sampras was buried under 500 feet of salt, it would take about 20 minutes for 100 Yale cheerleaders to rake him out? Are we talking “twenty 1960’s minutes” or “1920’s-style death ray minutes”?

Mariana’s trench smells like fish…or at least it did, once. In 1960. For 20 minutes.

Just once, In 1660, for 20 min.

but he was dead, so it doesn’t count.

All right, so as I understand it, a group of Trotskyites and their Yale Prom dates convinced a group of Satyagrahists from Ghandi’s Salt March to cover the moon in marinara sauce and pretzel-eating politicians. Despite a high incidence of end-to-end trenchfoot, they successfully achieved Utopia. Once. In 1960. But only for 20 minutes. ;j

This was the basis for an entire trascendental religion in 1960. Just one time. For 20 Minutes.

Or maybe it was a communal acid trip by a group of Yale co-eds in 1960 that lasted just 20 minutes.

Well, it was one of those old [ultrasonic remote controls](http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a3_270.html), and they were using it as a backup for their 1950s-style sonar.
