I was a facility monitor for a homeless shelter in one of my numerous occupational experiments, and I discovered that many homeless people lived in vehicles, camped out, bedded down under bridges, and slept on the beach, etc…sometimes coming into the shelter only after being run off from their regular spots, when they were hungry, or when the weather became harsh. I was amazed at how creative they could be while living out on the streets, and I was told many a story, like the man who dressed well enough to fit into the crowd at a nice hotel. He claimed that he could use their sauna, pool, exercise equipment, etc., and was complaining that more key entry and security was going to make things more difficult for him. Airports, train, and bus stations were also places they could go to hang out, and many were holed up in the library until closing time. I was sad to think that people were dragging themselves around like this, and it was also a problem dealing with the neighborhood where our shelter was not welcome. The homeless were blamed for every crime in the area, and the shelter was viewed as responsible for the cause of high crime. Finally we changed it into an all woman and children shelter, and sent the men to a different area to make the neighborhood feel better. I have no idea if crime went down. ---

Shit I used to marvel at how easy it would be to stay out of the cold in the USA, dollar theaters with 0 security where you could pay once and skip from theater to theater all day(or just go to sleep in one like many snoring homeless did all day), the big chain book stores that encouraged people to sit and read with comfy chairs(full of unwashed looking college students doing homework for HOURS) Dennys or McDonalds where you could order a coffee or two and sit for a few hours without being harassed(plus they let you plug stuff in!) malls with plenty of benches and food courts(grab a bag or empty cup to use as a prop if needed). I don’t disbelieve you it is just surprising. Were you dressed really shabby or attention grabbing or something? ---

It depends. Around here, if I am uptown, sure I can go to McDonalds or whatever. Matter of fact, there is a homeless guy that visits this commercial district, and when he gets some money he hangs out at Dunkin Donuts for hours. He’s fairly clean-smelling and such, so that helps. Downtown? Cops are always on the lookout for homeless people. And i’ve seen them move them along pretty quickly. No dollar theatres here. Colleges are also more stringent. Bookstores - there is only one left, and it’s in the mall, and they have limited chairs. They’d notice. It’s not as easy as it once was. ---
