Notre Dame's new head football coach will be...

No chance Stoops or Meyer go to ND. Oklahoma and Florida are both twice the jobs that ND is. ND is not near what it used to be.

A guy on the radio said they are not convinced Kelly can recruit at ND since it’s tougher to get in there than Cincinatti. I think in the long run that probably won’t matter since he might be the best coach they can get right now.

Damn. First ESPN report of the firing at 2:15

I had 1:30 PM in the my bar pool. If the idiot AD has started the process 16 minutes earlier I would have won 110 bucks.

ESPN was reporting over the weekend that Kelly is lobbying hard for the ND job. We’ll see. Between the problems at Notre Dame, the better records at competing schools, and buyouts, I don’t see them getting a coach from a big name school.

Do not count out Urban Meyer, just because he is at Florida and successful there. Nothing compares to winning a Championship and Notre Dame, I don’t like it, but it is the truth. And I think Meyer could recruit to ND like no other. And he does have a desire to coach there. I woulod put the odds on Meyer with Kelly a close second.

Here are the BetUS Odds:

Who will be the coach of Notre Dame in 2010:

Urban Meyer +300
Brian Kelly -135
Jim Harbaugh +500
Chip Kelly +500
Kirk Ferentz +1200
Bob Stoops +450
John Gruden +3000
Mike Shanahan +3000
Chris Peterson +700

I just cannot see Meyer. Florida is a better recruiting position than ND. Ultimately I think he has his eye on the NFL. If they win the championship this year I’d put 5-1 on him holding out for a pro position offer before making any decision. And I just don’t see ND waiting until after the NFL positions are all filled to get a coach.

Munch- not going to disagree with you about the money, ND can double Kelly’s salary pretty easily, and probably take care of his assistants well. The point I was trying to make is that UC had this written into Kelly’s contract, which was a big deal to him. I would venture to say that ND’s facilities are a cut above UC’s, but that gap is narrowing.

As far as playing for a championship, you are right, Cincinnati has to prove themselves a bit before they get there, but I’m not talking about the nat’l champ game, just a BCS bowl game, which the winner of the Big East is entitled to go to whether they are ranked 3rd or 43rd. The Irish do not have that same luxury.

In all honesty, I think Kelly is a prime candidate for the position, and would probably take it if offered, but there are some things that will weigh against the decision. If Urban Meyer wants the job, it is surely his to have.

I dunno about going to the NFL. Urban does seem extremely attached to the player development side of the college job. Nowadays, the money is about the same - it just depends on which aspect of the game you enjoy better. We’ll see, I guess.

ND is paying Weis the same amount Florida is paying Meyer ($4 million a year). I’m willing to bet they’ll offer an awful lot more to the head coach who’s won 3 of the last four national championships (assuming Florida wins out this season).

Its official, Weis has been fired.

IMO, If Stoops is the next Head Coach, it will be announced by tomorrow evening.

FTR, Kirk Herbstreit is on the record that it won’t be Bob Stoops. FWIW.

Paging Mr. Kelly. You have a phone call.

While I am sure Notre Dame has extremely deep pockets, Stoops and Meyer make about the same money Weis did and they both signed contract extensions this year that run through 2015. And they’ve both competed for (or won) national titles much more recently than Notre Dame has. Going to multiple BCS bowls and winning titles has more prestige than just coaching at Notre Dame does on its own.

Sure but winning a National title at Notre Dame outclasses all of that.

And who wouldn’t rather live in Florida than Indiana, anyway?

I have to doubt that ND is the most prestigious job in CFB anymore, btw - they haven’t been dominant in far too long. Sorry, Gangster.

I’ll point out that Davie went to one BCS bowl and Weis went to two. It seems as if people are thinking coaching at ND locks you out of that possibility.

That’s why Urban Meyer has a specific agreement with his wife that she cannot veto him taking the ND job.

They haven’t won a championship in 20 years, so there’s no basis for this statement. Decades ago I am sure this was true, but today I don’t think it is. It’s one program among many, and on the balance, it’s a program that’s been a little better than mediocre in recent years. The fact that they gave Weis a ridiculous contract so early in his career shows that the school knows that and is desperate to get back to where they used to be. But that’s not possible anymore.

Bob Stoops confirms he’s not leaving Oklahoma, by the way.

20 years! wow. That Notre Dame reputation sure goes a long way.

And Meyer’s about to go to his third BCS bowl (and possibly win his third championship) in six seasons at Florida. And while Stoops’ bowl record is not great the last few years, he’s won two BCS bowls and been to five others. Notre Dame certainly isn’t locked out of big games, but they’re not making as many of them and they also usually lose.
