NM looks likely to go to Bush. ABC’s numbers do not comport with FNC or Yahoo.

> **t-keela** : From what I’ve seen thus far…the house and senate will both remain Rep.

If they aren’t careful, they are going to run out of people to blame. He hasn’t “inherited” the problems, so to speak. He’s been the President for almost four years. That makes it harder to blame Clinton.

And with a Republican Congress and, most likely, a right leaning SCOTUS, he had better shape up or there will be no way to worm out of it.

Hmm…Now NBC is saying there are 400,000 votes to be counted in Ohio. Huh?

> Well, it’s a better indicator, so there is something there (I’m not unreasonable), but IME a lot of voters just vote a party line for House, sometimes Senate. It’s more likely that they’ve heard of the people in the Senate race anyway. Assuming Bush wins (I’m assuming that, barring unforeseen future events), then it’s reasonable to expect he pulls some Republican congressmen in with him.
>
> My main point, going back a few pages (maybe I’ll go back like **T-Keela** and quote myself) is that for the most part this was a slim victory. Not a mandate to further cut taxes or invade more countries. A lot of people voted their religious beliefs, which is certainly they’re right. If Bush continues making mistakes AND the Democrats do a better job of neutralizing the religious advantage, the Dems can make a comeback.

I really don’t mean this as a snarky remark, but mandate shmandate. No one cares about a mandate except the side that loses. It’s just the way it is. If Kerry won by the slimist of margins, would he forget about trying to rescind the tax cuts for “the rich”? No.

> But they’ve got to run more to the center and not to the Left. Find a southern Democrat governor that is also a Baptist and personally abhors abortion. It will help if they can run someone who came into office in a state with deficits and fixed them. Even better if he served in the military during a time that was not the Vietnam war. Better yet if he can claim Hispanic ancestry. Southern can include Southwest, but not Massachusetts. And it’s probably preferable not to have a voting record that can be spun and lied about. A disarming smile wouldn’t hurt.

Good point, except the abortion part. “Abhors abortion” is meanignless, and there is no way the Dems would nomniate a pro-choice candidate.

> Well, correct me if I’m wrong here, but lets say that there are 250,000 provisional votes left. And lets assume Kerry gets 60% of them (even though he didn’t get 60% of the vote in Ohio). That means Kerry gets 150,000 of those votes and Bush gets 100,000…and doesn’t that mean Bush still wins by 50,000? He’d need to get 70% of those votes to just get equal to Bush…something that seems unlikely, at least to me.

Kerry won 67-33% in the counted Cuyahoga ballots. Anything’s possible.

Thats 300,000 + 100,000 to 250,000 BTW so there’s potentially 550,000 still to count.

All as per CNN and the SoS of Ohio. That’s why they’re calling it too close to call.

I’m not. The EC is what matters. But you guys sure went on about the popular vote. Going to change your tune if Bush wins the popular vote by a margin six times larger than Gore’s?

But there is something else here - the popular vote gave Gore a bit of a moral standing to proceed with EC challenges. But Kerry is losing this thing 48-52. If he also loses the EC, then a legal challenge against the EC is not going to be received nearly as well by the people, I’d think. Bush is clearly the choice of the electorate as a whole, and if he wins the EC as well, that makes a challenge pretty difficult, doesn’t it?

They won’t nominate a segregationist either. Backwards is backwards.
