On the subject of “what is wrong with men?” well, all people have sides of them they don’t air in public. Plenty of liberal Democrats probably listen to Howard Stern on their way to work and chuckle at his racist, sexist jokes. Members of the Moral majority probably have a few Penthouses stashed around the house. Plenty of otherwise-loving husbands cheat on their wives. Plenty of otherwise-loving wives talk to their parents or friends about what a worthless piece of shit they think their husband is.
Methinks the OP was a tad ignorant on the true extent of human nature, and this thread represents her wake-up call.
I take MacKinnon seriously, but I think she is wasting her time. You can’t change what people think inside their head, or what they say in private to people they trust. Think of Hustler as belonging to that realm.

Last summer I was given the dubious task of checking up on a rumor that Hustler magazine had named a certain festival as one of the top three places in North America to get laid. I spoke to the editors-- and they admit that everything in the magazine is made up. They’ve got a handful of writers who make shit up, slap pseudonyms on their ‘articles’, and just laugh at the idiots who write letters.
It’s all fake.

Barbarian, I guess I’m just a little bit surprised. They do a pretty good job of making some of it seem real. But the porn industry is not exactly known for any kind of “moral forthrightness” (DUH!) so I guess bald-faced lying shouldn’t surprise anyone.

BTW, I happen to be somewhere in the middle on this - the larger issue of mysogynistic porn - not the issue of Hustler turning out to be the skin version of Weekly World News (see the BatGirl naked!) I agree that otherwise healthy individuals are not becoming sexually warped human beings through the pages of Penthouse (lovely, Miller, I laughed). Yet there are people who are borderline, they don’t have a great perception of women and it isn’t made any better by Penthouse.
I’m all for freedom of speech, I think it should be allowed. I just wonder what it says about us that it is. I’m also a pro-porn feminist with friends and aquitances in the industry. But that hard core crap can make me wonder about who we are.
I can’t prove she’s a liar, myself, but I do know she’s sometimes sloppy and doesn’t care about the truth if an anecdote will support her viewpoint.
McKinnon was speaking here about some issue this year and she used an example of a recent campus race-relations incident to illustrate her point. Her only knowledge of the incident, however, came from the student newspaper here. One source. The biased campus newspaper, which exaggerated some facts to make the story more dramatic. She really hurt someone by using that as an example, not knowing the true facts of the case. I’m still steamed.
Care to elaborate on this? Are you suggesting that most mysogynists are Islamic? Or that most Islamic people are mysogynists? And that the prohibition of porn in Islamic nations has something to do with this?
I don’t know why normal guys get a kick out of this type of porn, but they do. Go figure. Most of it is harmless.

Nope, just the opposite. There’s no porn there and there’s a veritable truckload of mysogyny. Ergo, I don’t think there’s necessarily a direct correlation. If the biggest mysogynists on the block have no porn, it probably ain’t the problem. CS Lewis rightly called Islam the “teatoaling religion”. Engaging in sexual vice isn’t the path to mysogyny.
Maybe the others are right and she’s more a crackpot than a liar, but she has spoken numerous untruths. Her insistence that snuff films exist, for example, which Cecil debunked. She can peddle her untruths without outright lies, she’s not stupid.
