I don’t know why, it has just stopped.
What will happen, no matter what burning software I use or type of burning I do, is that it will do most of the job, then stop claiming that there was a write error. Leaving me frustrated and with another shiny coaster.

I am using XP and a Samsung TS-H552B drive.

Also, after installing Alcohol 120% ( I am sure if this was the start of it, though), it now occasionally miss-recognizes it as a non-burning CD-drive. I uninstalled the program, but the problem persists. Programs like Nero are still able to use it (although they ultimately fail) but the windows add-on [ISO Recorder](http://isorecorder.alexfeinman.com/) is no longer capable of recognizing the drive as a burner.

I have installed the latest firmware, and I could find no newer drivers.

Can you burn a CD? If this fails then I would say the drive is toast.

Actually, that is what I have been trying to do. I don’t think that I have attempted a DVD burn.

Have you tried “removing” the drive from the device manager and rebooting? Does the burning software have a drive speed test option? Back when I used Roxio, it would test the read/write capabilites of a drive when first installed.

Nope, didn’t work. ☹

Although, I was able to copy a single text file onto a test CD using the standard Windows “drag and drop” feature.

This, if you look around, is a pretty common problem with this drive. you’ll find you can read factory pressed CD’s, but can’t get it to recognize blank CD’s, or read burned CD’s.

Supposedly, I can still burn DVD’s, but since I have no DVD’s, I don’t know for sure.

I recommend replacing the drive.
