Strange that we all thought it was Samsonite. American Tourister it is.

Samsonite is even better for Musk, though They even had it redy to go t the Moon. That might even be a SpaceX ship in the background:

Have you been simping for Elmo so hard that you’ve taken to following his Special K habit? Or do you dissociate and hallucinate naturally?

ISTM that this post and several of the responses to it are classic illustrations of what I observed in [this recent IMHO thread post on SDMB evolution:](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/your-thoughts-on-the-evolution-of-sdmb-in-time/991935/84)

> [@Kimstu](#):

> It’s true that many posters with well-established track records of saying stupid shit tend to get jumped on for potentially controversial remarks before it’s been clearly established that what they’re currently saying actually is stupid shit, though.

Here’s the part of Sam’s remarks that was most notable for its stupid-shit qualities:

> [@Sam\_Stone](#):
>
> If the vehicle can stop handgun bullets and arrows, maybe it won’t be as likely to dent when you accidentally bang into it carrying something.

And here are a bunch of reasonable responses by posters not “mercilessly attacking” Sam, but rationally pointing out the problems with what he said:

> [@Sylvanz](#):
>
> Not really comparable: Gorillas would destroy and ordinary suitcase

> [@wolfpup](#):
>
> Samsonite was making a relevant point about their hard-shell cases being break-resistant […]
>
> The ability to resist penetration by low-energy bullets or arrows says absolutely nothing about any useful product quality. It certainly says nothing about dent resistance.

> [@Euphonious\_Polemic](#):
>
> You should suggest that Tesla actually _say that_ in their advertising then, you know, like Samsonite and Timex did. Otherwise they just come across like complete loons

And here are some actual “attacks” and flames from other posters about some stupid shit that Sam didn’t actually say, some of which were pushed back on in subsequent posts by others:

> [@Chingon](#):
>
> […] idiots like Sam lining up to pay $90K+ […] I could hear Sam running down the street to defend Elon

> [@Dissonance](#):
>
> You can’t be this stupid. […] Have you been simping for Elmo so hard that you’ve taken to following his Special K habit? Or do you dissociate and hallucinate naturally?

All of which is perfectly legit for the Pit, of course, but it bears out my points in the other thread that

1. it’s not mere “deviating from the crowd” that gets posters piled on for saying stupid shit, and
2. it is true that sometimes anti-stupid-shit pile-ons can broaden to include complaints about stuff that wasn’t actually said.

Advertisers use silly things like gorillas as _puffery_, claims that the audience knows not to take seriously.

That’s not what Elmo’s demonstrations are. A consumer injured by a stray bullet could point at these ads and say, “a reasonable person and also Sam Stone would believe, based on these ads, that the cybertruck is immune to small arms fire.”

Two problems with the idea that this is a useful demonstration, from my perspective:

1. I’m no physicist, but I think that a bullet carries a lot less–what do physicists call that breaky-dingy-bumpy-force? _inertia?_–than things that typically come into play in a collision, e.g., another car, or a tree.

2. In a collision, the primary goal should be to protect the vehicle’s occupants from injury. I thought modern vehicles accomplished this with crumple zones–parts of the vehicle designed to be destroyed in the process of absorbing the energy of the collision. This demonstration doesn’t show that the vehicle lacks crumple zones, but to the extent that it implies anything, it implies that the vehicle responds stiffly to energy, and that the energy from an impact would be transferred to the entire vehicle (including occupants) rather than being transferred to crumple zones.

Let’s all try to guess what demographic Elmo is trying to appeal to with the Cybertruck. Hint: love for quasi-military paraphernalia, body armor, and semi-automatic assault rifles.

I can’t think of a vehicle _less_ like “one Bladerunner [sic] would’ve driven”…

The film with Mr. Runner was full of small, rounded, brightly colored vehicles:

Seat-of-the-pants guess: Samsonite is the iconic brand for that midcentury-styled luggage, the way Jello is for gelatin and Kleenex is for facial tissue.

I’d suggest that you are being so blinded by your determination to find what you are looking for that you are misreading. At no point have I mocked Sammy for things he didn’t say, nor was any of it “pushed back”.

To be blunt, I find your stringing together of two sentences from two different replies to two different posts with nothing but a […] to be misleading at the very best and bordering on deliberate misquoting of what I’ve actually written.
