ISTM that this post and several of the responses to it are classic illustrations of what I observed in [this recent IMHO thread post on SDMB evolution:](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/your-thoughts-on-the-evolution-of-sdmb-in-time/991935/84)

Here’s the part of Sam’s remarks that was most notable for its stupid-shit qualities:

> [@Sam\_Stone](#):
>
> If the vehicle can stop handgun bullets and arrows, maybe it won’t be as likely to dent when you accidentally bang into it carrying something.

And here are a bunch of reasonable responses by posters not “mercilessly attacking” Sam, but rationally pointing out the problems with what he said:

> [@Sylvanz](#):
>
> Not really comparable: Gorillas would destroy and ordinary suitcase

> [@wolfpup](#):

> Samsonite was making a relevant point about their hard-shell cases being break-resistant […]
>
> The ability to resist penetration by low-energy bullets or arrows says absolutely nothing about any useful product quality. It certainly says nothing about dent resistance.

> [@Euphonious\_Polemic](#):
>
> You should suggest that Tesla actually _say that_ in their advertising then, you know, like Samsonite and Timex did. Otherwise they just come across like complete loons

And here are some actual “attacks” and flames from other posters about some stupid shit that Sam didn’t actually say, some of which were pushed back on in subsequent posts by others:

> [@Chingon](#):
>
> […] idiots like Sam lining up to pay $90K+ […] I could hear Sam running down the street to defend Elon

> [@Dissonance](#):
>
> You can’t be this stupid. […] Have you been simping for Elmo so hard that you’ve taken to following his Special K habit? Or do you dissociate and hallucinate naturally?

All of which is perfectly legit for the Pit, of course, but it bears out my points in the other thread that

1. it’s not mere “deviating from the crowd” that gets posters piled on for saying stupid shit, and
2. it is true that sometimes anti-stupid-shit pile-ons can broaden to include complaints about stuff that wasn’t actually said.
