Should be interesting, considering that the current state of Full Self-Driving (according to one testing organization quoted in the article) required the driver to take control on average about every 13 miles. Were it not for the driver overriding FSD, according to one analyst the technology on average would produce three accidents every hour. The only way driverless taxis could possibly work with this kind of tech is on a very specific, very limited set of routes so carefully mapped out that the cars would, in effect, be on virtual tracks, and even then they’d probably keep getting in trouble. And even if it worked flawlessly, Elmo is going to have a hell of time with regulatory authorities. I’m all for driverless cars and technological advances, but Elmo has been such a hopeless optimist that it’s a wonder anyone ever listens to him any more. ---

We recently got a self-driving floor scrubber at my work. It can only follow pre-programmed routes that start and end from one specific part of the store, and it STILL needs help if a customer stands in the same spot for too long or a product display is six inches off from where it expects it to be even if that display isn’t in the way and it should be able to easily go around it. I doubt we’re going to see autonomous vehicles operating under road conditions any time soon. ---

He’s claiming that they’ll have a fully (really fully) autonomous vehicle, each for under $30,000, that functions as a cybercab (no steering wheel). ---
