Jimmy Carter was the only president we’ve had that [actually understood nuclear energy.](http://articles.cnn.com/2011-04-05/opinion/milnes.carter.nuclear_1_nuclear-reactor-nuclear-power-jimmy-carter?_s=PM:OPINION)

> [@](#):
>
> James Earl Carter, the 39th president of the United States. Almost 60 years ago, and then a young U.S. Naval officer working at the dawn of the nuclear age with the U.S. atomic submarine program, Carter was physically lowered into a damaged nuclear reactor in Chalk River, Ontario, Canada, and exposed to levels of radiation unthinkable today after an accident.
>
> “We were fairly well instructed then on what nuclear power was, but for about six months after that I had radioactivity in my urine,” President Carter, now 86, told me during an interview for my new book in Plains in 2008. “They let us get probably a thousand times more radiation than they would now. It was in the early stages and they didn’t know.”
>
> Despite the fears he had to overcome, Carter admits he was animated at the opportunity to put his top-secret training to use in the cleanup of the reactor, located along the Ottawa River northwest of Ottawa.
>
> “It was a very exciting time for me when the Chalk River plant melted down,” he continued in the same interview. “I was one of the few people in the world who had clearance to go into a nuclear power plant,” he said.

This man better than anyone else anywhere near his position knew what he was talking about. He wasn’t owned by the nuclear lobby and told them to fuck off. And thank the universe he did.

No, I’m sure he was secretly replaced with a hippy clone because everyone knows those diabolical fuckers are the ones really running the planet. It’s very hush, hush though. Don’t quote me. I want to live at least a little longer.

Carter said “no” to breeder reactors and plutonium reprocessing. He was right! France, Japan, Russia - they went ahead with it. Now what do they have to show for it? Tons and tons of enriched, weapons-grade plutonium piling up because they can’t do anything with it. That’s precisely the proliferation risk President Carter was trying to avoid.

After all this time and money there’s only one commercially working breeder, and that’s in Russia. It doesn’t even use the enriched plutonium. It’s a “new” reactor still being run like an old reactor. At 1,000 times the price! Such a deal! Meahwhile, increasing amounts of weapons-grade plutonium keep piling up. Don’t worry, we’ll figure something out. It won’t be a problem in 40 years! Sound familiar?

They said spent nuclear fuel wouldn’t be a problem in 40 years, about 50 years ago and guess what? It’s a huge problem now. Just ask Tepco.

Fool me once and all that.

If Jimmy Carter were here right now I’d kiss him.

Hey, as long as we can’t prove which cancers were caused by man made nuclear radiation and which would have otherwise occurred, then none of them are. It doesn’t matter whether Chernobyl caused 4,000 deaths or 600,000 deaths due to increased cancer levels because the non-industry people who have the cancers can’t prove the cause and must simply suffer and die without compensation because they can’t prove it. Blessed be the privatized profits and socialized losses.

Excuse me, but how old is he now? I though that according to many of the nuclear exaggerators he should be dead already a long time ago.

Since Carter endorsed the recommendations of Kemeny Commission that investigated Three mile island, one has to say that Carter was not against nuclear power, **even after TMI** , his main beef was against enrichment or the reuse of nuclear waste and plutonium.

> The accident at Three Mile Island made the nation acutely aware of the safety risks posed by nuclear power plants. In response, the President established the Kemeny Commission to review the accident and make recommendations. Virtually all of the Commission’s substantive recommendations were adopted by the Administration and are now being implemented by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The Congress adopted the President’s proposed plan for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Nuclear Safety Oversight Committee was established to ensure that the Administration’s decisions were implemented.

[Braving Heat and Radiation for Temp Job](http://www.nytimes.com/2011/04/10/world/asia/10workers.html)

This is some scary shit. I can’t wait to hear what other kinds of things we’re going to find out as this crisis continues.

> [@](#):
>
> Mr. Ishizawa, who was finally allowed to leave, is not a nuclear specialist; he is not even an employee of the Tokyo Electric Power Company, the operator of the crippled plant. He is one of thousands of untrained, itinerant, temporary laborers who handle the bulk of the dangerous work at nuclear power plants here and in other countries, lured by the higher wages offered for working with radiation. Collectively, these contractors were exposed to levels of radiation about 16 times as high as the levels faced by Tokyo Electric employees last year, according to Japan’s Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency, which regulates the industry. These workers remain vital to efforts to contain the nuclear crisis at the Fukushima nuclear plants.
>
> “This is the hidden world of nuclear power,” said Yuko Fujita, a former physics professor at Keio University in Tokyo and a longtime campaigner for improved labor conditions in the nuclear industry. “Wherever there are hazardous conditions, these laborers are told to go. It is dangerous for them, and it is dangerous for nuclear safety.”
>
> Of roughly 83,000 workers at Japan’s 18 commercial nuclear power plants, 88 percent were contract workers in the year that ended in March 2010, the nuclear agency said. At the Fukushima Daiichi plant, 89 percent of the 10,303 workers during that period were contractors. In Japan’s nuclear industry, the elite are operators like Tokyo Electric and the manufacturers that build and help maintain the plants like Toshiba and Hitachi. But under those companies are contractors, subcontractors and sub-subcontractors — with wages, benefits and protection against radiation dwindling with each step down the ladder.
>
> Interviews with about a half-dozen past and current workers at Fukushima Daiichi and other plants paint a bleak picture of workers on the nuclear circuit: battling intense heat as they clean off radiation from the reactors’ drywells and spent-fuel pools using mops and rags, clearing the way for inspectors, technicians and Tokyo Electric employees, and working in the cold to fill drums with contaminated waste.
>
> Some workers are hired from construction sites, and some are local farmers looking for extra income. Yet others are hired by local gangsters, according to a number of workers who did not want to give their names.

Earlier in this thread I linked to a site that documented when Lt. James Earl Carter of the US Navy was commended for stopping a meltdown. He has not been a proponent of nuclear power and knows as much about operations and meltdowns as anyone alive. His silence on the issue isn’t an endorsement for nuclear power. If he thinks nuclear power is a course the country should take, he has the expertise and the prestige to openly endorse it. That he hasn’t in the 32 years since TMI isn’t an endorsement.

Regulation is not a condemnation, he did accept the recommendations of the report… that were also accepted by the American nuclear industry.

People die every year just in the mining of coal. There was a link posted earlier in this thread about it (hell, I may have posted it myself). If you want to posit further issues from using coal as power, you probably don’t have to go further than the claim of global warming. Does nuclear contribute to global warming? Less than a coal plant, I’d say.
So, yes, I can point to the bodies and say coal killed them. So, PUT UP OR SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!

[Chernobyl's Tragic Legacy | HuffPost The World Post](http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/04/08/japan-radiation-chernobyl_n_846875.html) It is not difficult to find evidence of Chernobyl effects. It has resulted in horrible deformations in people and animals in the area. It has been very ugly. Plants also sport the effects of radiation,.
In people it takes time. Cancers for those not real close come along in the future when our memories fade and we can claim the it was not a result of nuclear plant meltdown. It is hard to accept the responsibility . It is a very human thing to pretend it is not happening. But it is.

That BTW was also a test, you see, others that read this thread in reality do not know much about a poster, and neither do I, but what is clear to me is that the quality of an opponent is demonstrated either by their knowledge or their capacity to discriminate among good or bad sources. Or if they are incapable of looking for information in the Google age.

I have seen and demonstrated how shitty was FX with his cite from “the sky is falling” with the rain in Berkeley.

Being unaware on what Carter has said about nuclear energy and nuclear plants painfully shows that what you said about him was pure BS.

>
> “I am very proud of what nuclear power has done for our nation´s security and well-being," Carter told a group of Cook employees before exiting the plant. “I think the future holds great opportunities for nuclear power because safety has improved, technology has improved and environmental quality has improved."

He was addressing the workers of a nuclear power plant and you thought he’d go off about his non-proliferation concerns, the concerns I specifically mentioned? The part about killing breeder reactors and weapons-grade plutonium processing, which he did?

See, I googled around to, to see what he’s had to say about this latest Japan crisis, and I can’t find anything. Can you? Your article is from 2005.

Here, I’ll give your google skills a little test. Which country is he planning on visiting, with the aim of convincing that country to give up its insane nuclear ambitions, among other things? It’ll only take you a sec, so I’ll wait…

> [@](#):

> The Carter visit to Cook comes on the heels of President George W. Bush’s visit Wednesday to a nuclear plant in Maryland, the first presidential visit to a nuclear plant since Carter´s 1979 visit to Three Mile Island in the aftermath of the accident there.

Wow, nuclear power plants are so safe and important it took 25 years - a quarter century - for an American president to set foot on a nuclear power plant, you know, just to see what the hell is going on in those places, 'cause like, they’re so strategically important and such?

The man steered us away from a particularly dangerous and wasteful nuclear path, but praised the hard working men (and women?) at a nuclear power plant. Duh.

I didn’t find that quote when I googled. I’d be interested to hear what he has to say post Fukushima. It is interesting that the quote you found says nuclear power is now safe and environmentally friendly, the unspoken assumption being that it wasn’t in the past. We are still assured in the same kind of language used a half century ago that nuclear is safe and cheap. Despite the many accidents.

No, that is ignoring that Carter knows that the commission that he set up did its job, it is also ignoring that concepts like global warming and peak oil were not much of a deal back in the 70’s. In any case the fact is that now you are choosing to ignore what he is recommending, logic tells me that Carter will be smart enough to see that a natural disaster that made a nuclear one does not change his views much when already his work next to a meltdown, TMI, Chernobyl were in his mind.

Because what we are talking about here is a few hundred bodies (out of the over 10,000 bodies STILL MISSING) won’t be able to have traditional Japanese cremation rights performed on them, since making them safe to handle will pretty much finish off the decomposition process and won’t leave anything to burn. But that’s going to be the case with thousands of the non-nuclear contaminated bodies that are STILL MISSING. That’s the part you were being deceptive on.
>
> As for contaminating Korea or China, that’s ridiculous. They dumped the equivalent of 5 or 6 swimming pools into the ocean…and ocean that has trillions of swimming pools worth of water in them. Outside of the immediate area around the plant they are checking the radiation levels and they are low…and get lower as you move further away. Yeah…China and Korea can both detect radiation from the spill as well as from airborn radiation. But the levels are FAR below legal limits, unless you have some data to the contrary. DO you have such data showing that the Japanese contamination in Korea or China are above legal limits??
>

That is a poor argument. The Japanese are putting dyes in the water to track the flow. It does not just disperse around the whole ocean. It goes into currents and pockets. It does not automatically disperse into the world oceans.

Leaving a nuke plant and saying something nice is not an endorsement, it’s being polite. If Carter wanted to support nuclear power, he knows how to do so. Economist asked Carter for a statement and he didn’t return their inquiry, that isn’t even a no comment, it’s silence.

Dick Cheney has endorsed and supported nuclear power. That’s how it’s done.

Meanwhile, in yesterday’s news, [http://theenergycollective.com/dan-yurman/55411/fukushima-nuclear-crisis-news-update-april-9-2011](http://theenergycollective.com/dan-yurman/55411/fukushima-nuclear-crisis-news-update-april-9-2011) the government of Japan has decided it may be necessary to further extend the exclusion zone, without specifying anything. Is this a safety measure? A land grab? A distraction? In any event, it is a hearty Fuck You to the homeowners who can’t live anymore in the larger exclusion zone. Good old eminent domain, a forced sale at a nuclear exclusion zone price if they are lucky. But it doesn’t matter to here because it isn’t us. Because we are shutting down nuclear plants, not building or extending operation on them.

Just keep on grasping straws, that would help remove the egg from your face…

Not.
