Hey All,

My wife pointed me to this article. [Best and Worst Electrolyte Drinks for 2023 | TheHealthBeat](http://paleoedge.com/best-and-worst-electrolyte-drinks/)
I did a search that brought up a 2006 thread where it looked like the tone was that those that purported that Nuun was giving me cancer rhetoric was scaremongering. But the article didn’t actually say, nothing to worry about.

So is my Nuun electrolyte replacement tab giving me cancer through benzene?

Thanks.

If there was evidence an energy drink causes cancer, trial lawyers would be chomping at the bit.

That’s a really crap article with obvious stupid errors. As to the benzene thing, wikipedia says this:

> [@](#):
>
> The UK Food Standards Agency has stated that people would need to drink at least 20 litres (5.5 gal) per day of a drink containing benzene at 10 μg to equal the amount of benzene they would breathe from city air every day.

> **[Benzene in soft drinks](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benzene_in_soft_drinks)**
>
> Benzene in soft drinks is of potential concern due to the carcinogenic nature of the molecule. This contamination is a public health concern and has caused significant outcry among environmental and health advocates. Benzene levels are regulated in drinking water nationally and internationally, and in bottled water in the United States, but only informally in soft drinks. The benzene forms from decarboxylation of the preservative benzoic acid in the presence of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and metal...

The article is based on a flawed premise, that drinking electrolytes is important for the mineral content of your overall diet (electrolyte drinks are good for quick replacement):

> [@](#):
>
> Water is consumed per kilogram of body weight more than any other item in the diet, making it a major source of minerals. However water does not supply enough of these minerals anymore.

For the purpose of getting enough minerals in your overall diet the mineral content of ordinary water is generally unimportant. Foodstuffs contain so much more. For instance you’d have to drink a litre of Perriere to get the same magnesium you get from a large slice of toast.

Thank You!

The article sounded scare monger to me, but I had no proof.

Thank you!
