This is all a bit academic, but Newark Airtrain actually goes to the middle of the Meadowlands swamp, where it connects to the real NJ Transit trains (and Amtrak, for some reason). So it goes to Penn Station in Newark, AND then proceeds to Penn Station in NYC. There is no need to take the PATH.

You are correct. NJ Transit Northeast Corridor line goes direct Penn to Penn.

Newark Liberty International Airport Station

Most NJ TRANSIT trains on the Northeast Corridor and North Jersey Coast Line stop at the Newark International Airport Station, which connects to AirTrain, a service provided by The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey that will take you to your airline terminal.

NJ TRANSIT operates 852 trains per week that stop at the new Newark Liberty International Airport Station, including 640 weekday trains (128 per day) and 212 weekend trains (106 per day). Specific NJ TRANSIT arrival and departure times are available in Northeast Corridor and North Jersey Coast Line timetables.

AirTrain service operates frequently to connect with NJ TRANSIT arrival and departure times. AirTrain will cease running to the Newark Liberty International Airport Station when trains are not in service, approximately 2:00 a.m. to 4:30 a.m.

Have done the airtrain with luggage from Newark deal. Given the ordeal I had just getting to Hoboken (not JFK), I’d be nervous about six hours.

Of course the best bet is finding out if American is transferring any aircraft from Newark to JFK, and asking the pilots if they’d mind giving you a lift. Too bad they’d say no.

Consider renting a car for the day. Go to Priceline.com for the car rental, you’ll get the best non-coupon pricing. Then, it’s all under your control and you have the option of grabbing lunch outside the airport.

I just looked at weekday rates. Lowest rate is $60 ($75 total) for an economy from Dollar - but they have mini-vans for $69 ($85 total) which sounds perfect for you.
