He has a little executive experience. From his Wikipedia article:

> Mamdani is a fan of [hip-hop](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hip-hop) and has composed and produced rap music.[[23]](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zohran_Mamdani#cite_note-Pitchfork-26) In 2016, under the rap moniker Young Cardamom, he collaborated with [Ugandan](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uganda) rapper HAB on an [EP](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/EP) titled _Sidda Mukyaalo_, which is [Luganda](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luganda) for “No going back to the village”.[[24]](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zohran_Mamdani#cite_note-site-27) In 2019, he released a [single](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single_(music)) titled “Nani” under the moniker Mr. Cardamom.[[25]](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zohran_Mamdani#cite_note-28) Cookbook author and actress [Madhur Jaffrey](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madhur_Jaffrey) is featured in the single’s music video, playing Mamdani’s grandmother.[[26]](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zohran_Mamdani#cite_note-29)

Producing music is an executive job, with lots of stuff that needs to be done by working with other people. And I’m impressed that he got Madhur Jaffrey to participate in a video. She’s old and famous.

It’s not a ton of executive experience, but it’s definitely not nothing, and suggests he has the capability to do that kind of work. For that matter, running a large campaign is executive experience.

But in a four way race for mayor, i wouldn’t put a lot of money on him winning.

Is that the rap album where he praised people who were convicted of working with Hamas, or was that a different one? Either way, that might not be a chapter you want to call attention to.

Social media is reporting that Cuomo will NOT run as an independent (good riddance!), meaning, AFAICT, the most significant opponent will be the highly corrupt incumbent, Adams. I’m sure they’ll all continue to spread the lies, exaggerations, and smears (AFAICT, and speaking as a Jew, not a single accusation of antisemitism against Mamdani has anything real behind it), but hopefully it won’t work. I think he’s got a good chance to win, but still early, so we’ll see.

No idea, I’ve never listened to his music. And i don’t live in NYC, so I don’t have a dog in this race. But the claim, “he has no executive experience” is false. He doesn’t have a lot, but he has demonstrated executive ability. Probably more than i have, and I’ve retired.

That has nothing to do with whether his platform or his other political leanings are good, bad, or neutral.

I think a larger point is that the Right will always have some smear going on. Whatever they choose will not be chosen because it’s accurate or it’s factually important. It’ll be chosen solely on the basis of how easy it is to sell.

So pay no attention whatever to what the raging propagandists are whining about now. It has exactly zero real-world meaning.

A point even larger than that is, should Mamdani be elected mayor, it won’t matter what he actually does or doesn’t accomplish, or how New York ends up faring under his leadership. Trump and Fox News and all of MAGA will describe the city as a dangerous, crime-ridden, godforsaken hellhole because of his Socialist policies.

This gets more relevant for higher offices, like President, but it’s applicable to most of them… For any given elected position, there’s a list of experiences I’d like to see in a candidate. But it’s a very long list. It’s so long, in fact, that it’s not really possible for any one candidate to have had all of them in one lifetime. So for any candidate, no matter how qualified, it’s always possible to make a statement of “They don’t have any \_\_\_\_\_\_ experience”, for some fill-in-the-blank.

That doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t elect that person. It means that you should look at the totality of all of the factors.

Agreed. At a certain point, being able to successfully run a campaign for a high profile political office _counts_ as executive experience.

Eh, i think it’s a real issue in general. It’s something i consider when voting. But of course, Chronos is right about the impossibility of finding a perfect candidate.

If i were voting in this election, I’d have to do a lot more research. But i wouldn’t rule Mamdani out for lack of executive experience.

It was also leveled against trump.

So yeah, it is a real issue.

It is not necessarily a deal-breaker however.

Obama had been a US Senator, the 2nd most common route to the Oval Office (governor is the 1st, IIRC)

However, trump had lots of executive experience and it was demonstrably bad.

I’d rather have no experience than several bankruptcies, a history of stiffing contractors and a ton of other malfeasance. Would that all the voters agreed with me on that qualification.

I’d like to see him get a chance. His campaign style was fresh and he doesn’t appearvto be of the,“strongly worded letter” type. The party could learn from him, but I don’t expect they will.

The specific relevant criticism of Trump _wasn’t_ that he had no executive experience: it was that he’d never been elected to office. We’ve had previous presidents without experience in elected office, but they’d all had storied military careers.

This is really giving me the “AOC isn’t qualified to be in Congress because she previously a bartender” or “Obama isn’t qualified because he was previously a community organizer” vibe. I don’t hear these criticisms of white men nearly as often.

As I heard it said in the Obama-Romney race: “Jesus was a community organizer. Pontius Pilate was a governor.”

Personally, I kind of wonder about anyone in politics who didn’t start as a community organizer, or something similar.
