Alright, Bill found me out. While it is against federal law for me to PURCHASE alchohol, and while it is against federal law to PROVIDE alchohol to myself, consuming it is not against the law. If I happen to find some. In front of me. Magically. And who am I to refuse magical booze? 😃 In other news: SisterRiddles who drinks men under the table and may or may not have a 30 page unit plan to write so she may or may not be coming is hot. She’s always been the pretty one. Not that I’m bitter or anything… 😉 ---

First of all, SwimmingRiddles, to be picky (because that’s the way they taught me to be in law school, dammit) the laws regarding the sale and consumption of alcohol are state laws, not federal laws. Interestingly (if this sort of stuff interests you), the control over alcohol was pretty much reserved to the states under the 21st Amendment (the one that repealed prohibition). That’s one reason you’ll see such a wide range of alcohol laws among the states, with a number of states reserving to themselves the right to sell wine and liquor in state run liquor stores. To implement the national 21 year old drinking age, the federal government had to bribe the states by threatening to withhold highway money if they didn’t change state drinking age laws. Anyway, you are correct that it is illegal to for a resturant or bar sell or provide alcohol to someone below the age of twenty-one, under [url=http://assembly.state.ny.us/cgi-bin/claws?law=82&art=65]New York Penal Law Section 260.20[/ur], entitled “Unlawfully dealing with a child in the first degree” it would be equally illegal for any of us Dopers over 21 (or under 21 for that matter) to provide you with alcohol. Understanding that we are all upright, law-abiding citizens here, and you yourself would not violate the law regarding purchase of alcohol, there appears to be no way for you to acquire alcohol that evening. In other words, I guess it’ll be no booze for the Swimmer. I’m so sorry about that. * * * You don’t have a thing to worry about. I’ll have the jury eating out of my hand.
