NYT Spelling Bee drives me crazy

Try this one. And, yes, I knew the word, mostly in connection to pomegranates. And as said, the word appears in crossword puzzles, though some crossword puzzle words never appear in the Spelling Bee.

As is ADIT, but no love 48 times and counting.

I wish they’d accept ALULA. I’m only familiar with the word because it’s a palindrome, but I still want them to accept it.

SPOILER

Oops, sorry.

I garden, and I know the word from that.

Yep. From the grocery store.

I thought I would like this game, but I’m finding the limitations of the dictionary to be very frustrating.

And I might be crazy, but it seems they add words based upon reader input, kinda like saying “you forgot abcdefg” and them later putting abcdefg as a solution. This happened in one of the puzzles earlier this week, where, on the first day of the puzzle’s release, I entered a musical term (spelled correctly), it wasn’t accepted, but tonight, I tried it again and it was accepted.

What word? (Probably best to spoiler it in case anyone cares.) Go to SBSolver.com and look up the history of the word in question. It’ll tell you when it’s been accepted and when it hasn’t.

You either get used to playing to a particular dictionary or you don’t. There’s a balance he has to strike between moderately obscure and too obscure. I’ve got a big list of words I think are not obscure but he disagrees. I don’t agree with many of his choices, but I’ve learned what those choices are.

I’d also like to know what word you’re referring to.

But, yes, we’re all frustrated by the apparent capriciousness of Sam’s word list. Discussion of that makes up about 99.99% of the content of this thread.

Speaking of which, MIDDEN, MUEZZIN, and a bunch of UN words weren’t accepted today. ISTM that nearly any adjective that can be applied to some members of a group and not others could result in a word in the form UN_____ED.

So in today’s puzzle, why not:

UNDENIED
UNENDUED
UNIMMUNIZED
(pangram)

UNMENDED
UNMINDED
UNMINED

I’ve gotten to Genius but not Queen Bee today, so there may be others I haven’t found yet.

I would be very surprised if they did that (retroactively added a word to a previous day’s puzzle). For one thing, that would retroactively turn some solvers from Queen Bee status to Genius status (because they would suddenly be one word short of finding every word).

I, too, would like to know the mystery word. If it was TOCCATA, it’s because you spelled it wrong, like I do every single time it shows up. :slightly_smiling_face:

We all just have to try UN- with everything and hope for the best

Sometimes even twice!

Disappointed that MUEZZIN was not accepted, but I’m not sure how obscure it is.

I would say that that word isn’t as obscure as words related to other faiths like Hinduism, and ARHAT, HATHA

And it appears in travelogues about the Middle East and North Africa, as in “the call of the Muezzin”

See, that’s the thing. It was that word, and I know how to spell it - Two T’s, Two A’s, and Two C’s is something I taught myself in Music Appreciation 101.

And I didn’t mean to imply they add words after day 1, my apologies if I did. What I did mean to say is that it seems they add words in the first hours after the game is released. And it’s a pretty easy programming fix to say if you hit Queen Bee status, then you don’t lose it even if they add words. Hell, it’s not a difficult programming challenge to say if you hit QB status with 46 words for you not to lose it and the word count to remain the same for your account, even if they add 5 more words.

Anyway, the number of words that I know that this game apparently doesn’t know is irritating.

If you ever read the comments on the SB website, there are super-users who finish the puzzle immediately and post the clues which later are added to the SB Buddy (you can see their names there). There are no words added in the first hour after the game is released.

It’s plenty irritating to everyone. But realize that any word that gets added means no one can get to Queen Bee without that word. So how hard is he going to make the puzzle? You just learn to play by his quirky constraints, and then come here and complain.

It’s how you build community!

I think of it less as “find the words” and more as “find the words Sam has decided to include today.” I’ve already tried four words today that aren’t there, even without decrying those that are and could be made into additional normal words with the available prefix and suffix options.
