NYT Spelling Bee drives me crazy

I tried that too

Everyone is trying that today.

Oddly, I did not try that, but I did reach QB.

I reached 1000 Geniuses today, of 1030 games played, those 30 being before the badges were instituted.

So are all you dopers enjoying the GANJA in today’s puzzle?

It’s 4:20 somewhere!

Is that one new, BTW?

Just FYI, you can go to spellingbeesolver.com and look up the Spelling Bee history of any word.

They say it’s been allowed once before today - March 2, 2025.

It’s probably never been a possible word before. Certainly not since I’ve been playing.

ETA: oops, ninjaed

Yeah, but @Maserschmidt knows if it was allowed, then disallowed, then allowed again, etc.

Well, yeah, but you didn’t ask him.

Oops, wrong link: https://www.sbsolver.com

That’s where I get it! But I also have a database of past games for more esoteric questions.

I hope someday the NYT will post all the old puzzles back to the beginning. I’ve played 1,033 games, but sbsolver goes back to May 2018.

You may have actually played more games than that, if you got the 1033 number from the Stats popup. My count in the Stats is 1032 (I missed at least one game in that time), but I know I’ve played 1869 games, based on my log.

I suggested via the comments that they make the archives available, as they are for the crossword puzzle, Wordle and some of the other games. But I think that would result in endless amounts of quibbling over which words were accepted and when. I’ll bet that the editors just don’t want to deal with it.

I also asked that the game allow me to show the list of words I’ve found in order of finding them, so I can kick myself for how long it took me to get an obvious four-letter word. (The iPhone app version does show the last three or four words but not the whole list.)

I agree.

There’s a basic word search game called Squardle. https://squaredle.app/ If you install/play on your phone, you can turn your phone sideways and see both the game on one half of the screen, and the words in order of either alphabetically, or in order of entry, on the other half. The left half of the screen with the found words scrolls, while the right half with the puzzle stays stationary. The screen that you see if you go there on a computer looks like the sideways view on a phone. I would love it if Spelling Bee could do that on the phone app and on the computer! It doesn’t seem like it would be all that difficult.

I’m not a fan of the S.

I like it. I think it’s an accommodation for the Y, the K, and the Q.

When you wrote that, I thought you were saying you didn’t like Squardle. That was before I opened the puzzle.

Which is a real bitch today.
