NYT Spelling Bee drives me crazy

Is this the first time it took tipi?

Correctomundo. It’s been rejected 55 times but persistence has paid off. Finally, it dawned on Sam that having only two ways to spell teepee was ludicrous.

See, I spell it your way, too, but apparently the newly allowed version was preferred for a long time. I don’t really recall seeing it spelled any other way than yours, but looking at nGrams, all three have been popular at various times.

It’s just one of those oddities about this game. One has to try a word like abattoir or tipi every time because it might be accepted, even if one is sure it’s been rejected in the past. 55 times is remarkable, though.

Yeah, that’s crazy!

Today is the first time I scored Genius with 43 words.

I feel like I’m seeing more puzzles with ING+ED lately, but maybe just my imagination.

OK, so WILDING wasn’t accepted, but WILDLING was? The former is in MW and the OED.
My head was spinning with all the Ws today, 49 out of 57 words. And yesterday I didn’t expect the 3 variant spellings of the same word, tipi, tepee, teepee

Yeah, I thought it would be accepted, but I’m pretty sure I’ve tried it before to no avail.

I’m sick of ED and ING puzzles so close together. It’s repetitive and a poor use of my word game time.

Sometimes when I’m stuck, I try out potential words that I really don’t expect to be accepted. These guesses follow the rules of English orthography, so they’re not wild-ass guesses. Every once in a while, one of them actually hits. This happened today with orthotic.

“Gibbets and crows!” he hissed.

I guess Sam isn’t into poetry; they didn’t take TROCHAIC, which would have been a pangram.

Every time it rejects a simple word, I can’t help momentarily thinking, “Am I imagining that?” No, I’m not.

I will forgive the omission of “hoon” though.

Sam is clearly biased against musicologists, given the omission of MONODY and HYMNODY (blurred because they imply other, accepted words).

@Gyrate I was annoyed at both of those. And it won’t take HOYDEN either.

@commasense TROCHAIC was another too. I thought pangram! and was disappointed.

DENNED wasn’t accepted but YENNED was? I can’t see the rhyme or reason behind this.

Ooh, I forgot about “hoyden”. An excellent word.

It also didn’t take MONONYMY but did take HOMONYMY.

It didn’t take demonym, either. Hmm, the discourse dictionary doesn’t discern demonym, dodos.

Yes, very disappointing to see Not in Word List come up when I entered DEMONYM. However DONEE is considered a valid word. Really??

I made it to Queen Bee thanks to a hint for MONEYMEN which I never would have guessed without the hint. In fact my phone doesn’t think it’s a word and has the wavy red line under it as I type.

I was slightly annoyed the other day when it had ED and ING so for every verb I had to try adding each of those on the ends.
