Seconded. I know I’m not the world’s most well-read person, and I’m certainly not a scientist or geologist, but I am quite certain I’ve never seen that word before.

Me too. I got it from a clue by the SBB, but I’m pretty sure I have never seen it.
Another “WTH?” on today’s pangram. I tried it assuming it wouldn’t work and burst out laughing when it did.
The same for me except no laughter. I notice on SBB it’s the second least likely word to have been found.
I knew from Spelling Bee Buddy that there was a ten-letter word starting with the letter M remaining to be found and I guessed it was a compound word. So I was trying various things but didn’t get that word without reading the hint. It can be hit-or-miss whether any given compound word is acceptable.
That’s how I did it.
Thanks for mentioning Spelling Bee Buddy. If it had been discussed before, I didn’t notice or check it out. I just did, and it does exactly what I’ve wanted for years now.
I have used this Hints page when I wasn’t making as much progress as I wanted, but Buddy does all the counting and correlating that you have to do manually with Hints.

For yesterday’s puzzle, I might have figured out LINEAGE, but LINAGE was a new one on me, and I’d say it’s just as obscure and technical as TALKBACK, which wasn’t accepted today.
Yeah, there were a number of compound words accepted or not with little rhyme or reason today.
I’m also surprised it didn’t accept TABI given all the other Japanese stuff normally accepted.
Compound words are always a crapshoot. Today has more because there’s a couple words in it that are very much more common in compounds than most other four-letter words.
I find it annoying that KATABATIC is omitted.
Indeed if microcrack is acceptable, why not macrocrack?
It would lead to too many “Your Mom” jokes. 
Got to Genius today, but I find myself approaching UN puzzles with a feeling of weariness as I know I’m going to try every word with that prefix, and it will be a mix of results.

Agreed. I wonder if there’s been a UNEDI(N)G puzzle, and what the extra letter has been.
UNENDING has appeared in zero puzzles.
So unless the 7th letter was the middle letter, that’s that then.
How about UNEDITING?
