disgusting -well known college programs are playing these teams today Youngstown St. E. Illinois Samford Coastal Carolina Weber St. Richmond Tennessee -Martin Elon Stony Brook Presbyterian Norfolk St. Thanks to a rating system that rewards victories above all else. ---

yes it is a scrimmage for the better teams. But those games are a big payday for schools like Samford and UT-Martin. Probably a significant portion of their budget. Oops, Jacksonville St just beat Ole Miss in Overtime. ---

LSU leads 30-10 now. I wonder how many people would have pick North Dakota State to beat Kansas. The Bisons won, at Kansas, 6-3. That had to be painful to watch for the Rock Chalk Jayhawk faithful My Ramblin’ Wreck is going to Lawrence next week. I have no clue why this game was scheduled. the only time GT/KU have played each other in football was in the 1948 Orange Bowl. (GT won). AFAIK, it is not on national TV, Fox Sports Midwest is picking it up. Maybe some other regional networks. ---

Georgia Tech has had several nicknames over the years, “Engineers” “Blacksmiths”, etc. The Yellow Jackets evolved from a nickname from the John Heisman (yes, THE John Heisman). era. Sportswriters called his 1917 Nat’l championship team the Golden Tornadoes. IIRC, “Golden Tornadoes” evolved into Yellow Jackets when the students from a cross town girls school (Agnes Scott) came to the football game in “yellow jackets.” Officially, it is the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. But if you ask any hardcore alumnus, they will tell you that they are a “Ramblin’ Wreck from Ga Tech and a helluva Engineer” ---

Bad news on the settings front–it appears there is no option to reduce the number of games to be picked each week. Sorry, but it looks like we’re stuck with the Top 25, SEC, and Yahoo Default games. On the upside, picking that many games should add a degree of depth… ---

What the hell is a Samford and why are they playing top schools. It is not like playing powerful Appalachian State. The BCS has made out of conference games a joke. It is what happened to college Bball where you have to shoot for 20 wins, regardless of who they are against. Computers are destroying sports. I took it easy on you guys. Just lulling you into sleep. ---

Nearly every team has a cupcake on their schedule. Many of them are a creme puff disguised as a cupcake. I would guess that a good portion of Samford’s annual budget was “earned” as FSU sacrificial lamb. BTW, how did scheduling a cupcakes work out for Ole Miss and Kansas? Samford is in the same conference as Appalachian State. And is the alma mater of both Bobby Bowden and Jimbo Fisher. It is an Div 1-AA school, like North Dakota St and Jacksonville State who beat Div I schools who were in the top 10 in the last couple of years. Would I like to see all blockbuster non-con games? Absolutely, but I don’t dwell on it. This week, we got Penn St/Bama and FSU/Oklahoma amongst a few others. ---

Not sure why, but we do not seem to be picking the Thursday games. State over Auburn tomorrow night was going to be my upset special of the week. 29 games to pick this week. Earliest game I saw was on Friday, but I could have missed something. Get those picks in! Given my brilliant pick of VT over Boise State last week, I’m sure you’re all on the edge of your seats waiting for the upset special this week. I suspect that a gambler could probably make some bank just beting against whatever I pick. This is why Oak doesn’t usually bet on sports. However, fearless prognosticator that I am, this week’s upset special is: Tennessee at home over (7) Oregon. I think the clear Game of the Week has got to be Alabama/Penn State. Winner of that game just may be your next SEC/BCS Champion. Roll Tide! Oklahoma/Florida State should be another good one. Doc will probably be watching it in Valhalla, and Bill Watts is probably going to make a bet with Ron Simmons. I’m thinking the Big Cowboy is gonna win that bet, and the Boomer Sooners get the win, in a closer game than they’d like. ---
