Obama complains about Netanyahu; Sarkozy calls N. a 'liar'. Worse than the Green Line speech?

Not to nit pick but two politicians told the truth about a third politician.

The problem the Republicans have with Jewish voters is that Jews have a pretty good idea which party the white supremicists vote for. They remember which side of the political spectrum was on their side when things got really dark for the Jews. Their religious morals line up much better with Democratic principles than Republican principles.

The only thing the Republicans have over the Democrats is support for Israel and its policies. Seriously there might be more blind unflinching loyalty to Israel and their policies among Republicans than there is among Jews in Israel.

It’s not just religion. In general - particularly if you leave out the Orthodox - most American Jews are pretty liberal. The Republican strategy is apparently based on the idea that a lot of Jews are single-issue voters and the issue is Israel, but I’ve never seen any evidence that’s is the case.

Or Jews in America. Not all American Jews take the hyper pro-Israel stance that is favored by many politicians in both parties.

This as the US are vetoing the UN recognition of Palestine, and threatening to stop funding Unesco over the same reasons.
Get some medical help, CitizenPained.

No, apparently it has been extended to not being supportive of the guy when he is being criticized in private. Every second is one more jump away from reality with those people.

You’re out of line here. Don’t post this kind of personal insult in this forum - do it in the Pit or keep it to yourself.

This wasnt a pit thread?

Since it’s in Elections, no, it’s not. (I’m going to move it to Great Debates, but that’s beside the point.) Even if a thread is obviously going to get moved to the Pit, the rules of the other forums apply unless that’s where the thread actually is.

Was joking. Wont contest the warning in a 13 pages long rant about how Mods are out to get me in ATMB. But given the enormous bias displayed in the thread, I’m betting on a move to the Pit in less than a day (without me posting in it).

Thanks for that link CitizenPained, I am a bit more proud of my President than I was just a few minutes ago.

He is more likely to get my vote next year but then again there was no chance he would not get my vote. Hopefully this is the start of a trend toward openly criticizing the activities of the current Israeli government but I doubt it.

This cannot possibly hurt him, I can’t believe anybody would think that it could, especially given the times we live in.

Yeah, I’m having trouble seeing this as a big deal, myself. These guys sit through many long, boring and ultimately frustrating meetings and summits and whatnot, where they want to accomplish something but can’t for whatever reasons… so they make occasional (and rather catty) remarks about each other. Doesn’t everybody everywhere do this sort of thing?

I’m slightly amused by the candid and blunt nature of the exchange, but it doesn’t matter if it was Obama and Sarkozy about Netanyahu, or if it had been Obama and Netanyahu about Sarkozy, or Sarkozy and Netanyahu about Obama… Their jobs are stressful and kvetching is an outlet for stress. Nothing to see, here.

Yea, I’m always kinda fascinated by these occasional candid moments that get recorded between world leaders.

One of the many reasons to be pissed at Richard Nixon is that the Watergate Affair put an end to Presidents taping Oval Office conversations. Granted the practice wasn’t terribly smart and probably legally questionable, but listening to the Nixon, LBJ and Kennedy recordings is pretty neat.

You seem to be assuming that the Green Line speech will hurt Obama’s vote total in 2012. Why?

Really? I was under the impression that recordings (and/or transcripts) of such meetings were still being made, to be eventually published (assuming no national security implications) in the president’s post-term library.

If the Jews are consistently so much for the Democrats, why don’t the Republicans ditch them and try to fish votes form the people that are opposed to Israel?

Well, I hope your right and I’m wrong, but I don’t think thats the case. I heard an interview with Bill Clinton a couple years ago about how during his Presidency he wanted to generate some record of his day-to-day affairs in the Oval Office for posterity. He floated the idea of recordings and his lawyers and aides had a fit, since even if he kept it secret there was the chance they could be supeoned in some future court case (which, I guess, given how things turned out, wasn’t exactly an unlikely possibility).

So he settled on some convoluted scheme where he met with a historian every day for a few minutes to summarize what had happened, and the historian kept a sort of secret running journal of the Presidency. Which is kind of a cool project in its own right, but not as neat as listening to the fairly candid Nixon or LBJ tapes.

I think the GOP is trying to appeal more to evangelicals, Islamophobes and military hawks then American Jews when they try and paint Obama as anti-Israel.

Even in Florida, Jews are a pretty small fraction of the electorate, and Jews for whom Israel is a “top three” issue is even smaller. So even if the GOP really does think that they could gain some traction with the issue amongst Jews, I doubt it would really help them outside of maybe one or two FL House seats.

Until the subject happens to come up . . .

Jews are a very small minority in the United States. Only in a few states is the “Jewish Vote” important. But there are growing numbers of evangelical Christians who have a religious fixation about Israel. God will bless those that bless Israel, and curse those that curse Israel. It doesn’t matter what Israel does or if the Prime Minister of Israel is a dick, the correct thing to do is bless Israel no matter what.

You probably think I’m kidding.

It’s called Christian Zionism and it goes back centuries in both the U.S. and the UK. Making it older than just plain Zionism, if that starts with Herzl.
