MHO, it’s not so much Ayres himself, but the image that Palin is trying to conjure — that Obama is “not like us.” From AP columnist [Douglass Daniel](http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/politics/2008229919_appalinswordsanalysis.html):

> [@](#):
>
> “Our opponent … is someone who sees America, it seems, as being so imperfect, imperfect enough, that he’s palling around with terrorists who would target their own country,” Palin told a group of donors in Englewood, Colo. A deliberate attempt to smear Obama, McCain’s ticket-mate echoed the line at three separate events Saturday.
>
> **“This is not a man who sees America like you and I see America,”** she said. “We see America as a force of good in this world. We see an America of exceptionalism.”

(Obviously, emphasis mine.)

Well what he’s doing now is simply pointing out that McCain is going negative. Which is the way to do it.

Well why isn’t Obama like the rest of us?

Some people might assume it’s because he’s a Democrat, but others will think it’s cause he’s black.

She didn’t say, “Obama is not like the rest of us,” and leave people to draw their own conclusions about what made him different. She characterized Obama’s alleged view of America, said that it was not the same as that of herself and her audience, and then went on to characterize her/their view. Her statement may be slimy pandering bullshit, but it is not racist, and to label it as such weakens the word and obscures the many legitimate complaints against this team of quasi-mavericks.

Oh, how I cannot wait until the word maverick is finally put out of its misery (bolding mine).

And setting up McCain for meltdown tomorrow (and to exploit it if it occurs) is [this](http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2008/10/06/mccain-to-get-more-aggressive-who-is-the-real-barack-obama/) comment out of the Obama camp:

> [@](#):

> “On a day when the markets are plunging and the credit crisis is putting millions of jobs at risk, the one truly angry candidate in this race kept up his strategy of ‘turning the page’ on the economy by unleashing another frustrated tirade against Barack Obama," Spokesman Tommy Vietor said.

I AM **NOT** ANGRY!

Angry. Erratic. Frustrated. Whiney. Not suitable to lead. All these years and still not ready to lead.

There was an article in the Times over the weekend about the real Mavericks, the Texas family, still going, who decided not to brand their cattle. They are liberal to the point of being called Commies in the past, and they are really pissed at McCain misusing their name.
