# Obama's Gallup approval up to over 51%. Why?

The economy was in a death spiral towards the end of W’s last term, he didn’t get a sympathy bump until after McCain was defeated. If you go by the conventional stats (inflation, unemployment rate, the DJIA), the economy is doing very well.

To be sure, there are problems that don’t show up in those stats, but overall, MOST people think things are good, and are giving Obama the credit (as they would ANY president).
