Along the same lines, the state flag of Corsica (an island off the coast of France) is a white backgroud with a black sillouette of a head. From what I gather, the man’s name was Moore. So, the Corsican flag is called the Moore Head. There is also a Flushing, MI. ---

On the border between Washington state and British Columbia, Canada is the **Strait of Juan de Fuca** I heard years ago they had a new college out there, and rejected naming it after the Strait (and Ridge and tectonic plate, and a whole bunch else out there), came up with some other name for the school, thus depriving us of this conversation: inquiring older person “Where do you go to college?” student “Fuca U.” older person leaves, muttering about the insolence of Youth. ---

I have several bottoms near me. Pratts Bottom, Locksbottom…my W **A** G is that they were once bottom fields (low lying) on farms owned by Mr Pratt and Mr Lock. Not sure if there’s a crack in my perspective… Kids love it: “Where do you live old lady” ? “Ohhhh, she said ‘bottom’” ---

There are loads of them here in England, but the first that comes to mind is Gropec\*nt Lane in London. It’s been renamed now but it was originally named when the c-word wasn’t considered as rude as it is now. And yes, it was a haunt for the Laydees of the Night. With “butt” not having the same meaning here as it does in the good ole USA, there’s loads of “Butts Mews”. The local mall is called “St Mary’s Butts” and just round the corner from where i live is a “White Butts Lane”. ---

I spent many a happy hour leering at the girlie’s jogging on Wimbledon Common in my younger days ! Never was I aware the Queens Butt within sniffing distance – in the middle you say ? – probably somewhere near the end of the golf course, perhaps… One of my favourites in London at the moment is Bleeding Heart Yard (just off Farringdon) – great name ! ---

Amusing stuff.[/hijack] There’s also **Elmer’s End** and **Lickey End**. I don’t know the origins of the latter, but I do know that most of the US town names containing “lick” referred to salt that was found there when it was settled (for the livestock).
