I think Eddie Antar (not the guy in the commercial) fled to Israel to avoid prosecution. ---

And we got the commercials all the time on New York TV. The prices were low, but not really insane. The spokesman was Jerry Carroll, who died in 2020. “Crazy” Eddie was Eddie Antar. Apparently the business he and his brother started was fraudulent from the beginning, but it kept coming back to life (and Carroll kept getting hired as spokesman). His story really WAS insane. He did flee to Israel in 1990 using the name “David Jacob Levi Cohen”, which sounds like he was trying to come up with the most Jewish-sounding name possible. YouTube says this commercial is from the “late 80s.” Danny DeVito was already a pretty big star by then, to be making cameos in commercials. So I’m gonna guess it was another actor in the same ballpark, intended to look (somewhat) and sound (a lot) like DeVito.
