You have this belief that people would _agree_ with you if only they _understood_ what you were arguing. Since we don’t agree, therefore we must be too dumb, or to immersed in groupthink to understand. This is the hallmark of the narcissistic, self-centered mind. Try considering some other possibilities for once. Wrong. I don’t care about agreeing or disagreeing. Let’s say we are debating minimum wage. Let’s say you are for it and I’m against. We can disagree all we like. I don’t care. What I do care is when people say “oh you don’t like minimum wage therefore you hate the poor and are a bad person and everything you say is bad by association.” Situation one is an honest disagreement which I have no problem with. I don’t even have a problem with disagreements if someone doesn’t quite understand what I’m saying. What I do have a problem with are with people who lie about what I’m saying, as a group, call me a troll, derail the thread, and then complain about me. I wouldn’t even be bothered if it was merely misread. I wouldn’t be bothered if I was asked for clarification or elaboration to flesh out my larger concerns. Especially in an environment in the real world where freedom of speech issues on social media platforms, college campuses, and the environment in general is under attack. By both sides to be honest. But I am bothered by personal attacks and lies. Weaponizing language and turning an accusation of racism or homophobia or sexism into the modern day equivalent of being a heretic or the US equivalent of being a blasphemer is something people who are worried abut freedom of expression and how powerful institutions can shut down communication need to be concerned with. The SDMB is a tiny, tiny, tiny, tiny subset of the world but some of the same principles apply. And it’s interesting to see that even in a place that prides itself, unjustifiably, on hosting forums that fight ignorance and engage in “great debates” is unable to fail to fall victim to the same emotionally charged mob justice mentality. It also doesn’t help that we have posters who actively push for more of that. If I had a bit more prudence I would have stepped back and waited a bit to post. Let things cool down. But out of principle I don’t think we should be chilled from able to advocate a point of view or debate a nuance or an unintended consequence of a rule change just because it attracts people who have an agenda and are willing to take a warning or two, since there are several of them, in order to demonize people solely to discredit them and not the idea. The thing is, the mods who claim to want a place that has a ruleset scattered as it may be, have actually capitulated to the idea that a loud mob does indeed rule. It is a virtual Hecklers Veto. ---

Octo…we had a little talk last night about you learning your lesson. You cannot keep slapping at people and spouting indefensible points and expect to be accepted. You are welcome to have any opinion you want. Trying to convince others of your opinion is fraught with landmines. Can you maybe state your opinion and leave it there. You are bound to get push back. Your reputation as a fighter precedes you, so now it’s gonna be tough to shake the nay-sayers. And, this; get over the other board shit you keep bringing up. Nothing can change that. But I did! So I proved you wrong!” Now from a distance, you can either have pity on somebody who sit their pants or you can laugh at somebody who shit their pants. But when you have to ride in a car with somebody who shit their pants, it becomes unpleasant. You didn’t shit your pants but you have to deal with the smell of the shit in their pants. And it gets annoying the way they keep yelling “Ha Ha! Look at you! I’m making you smell my shit! I win!” ---
