I did not see this one personally, but it was related to me by a usually reliable source. During a stay in Caracas, Venezuela, he worked in a building just down the street from a porn theater. One Sunday, he passed by on the way to work and did a double-take–the building was suddenly a church, with Bible quotes on the marquee.

Monday, it was a porn theater again.

He asked his local coworkers about it, and learned that the church and the theater had a time-share arrangement.

Nowadays, porn is mostly sold online, but I used to see strip malls containing both Christian book stores and porn dealers, both kids’ clothing stores and naughty lingerie shops.

Hidden in the back of [this strip mall](https://www.google.com/maps/@38.921547,-77.23492,3a,75y,266.81h,76.08t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1s1BA1wgOWz6Hxf1fJrCc4Ng!2e0) is a lingere/sex toy shop. There used to be a pool supply store on the corner and a Toys “R” Us in the next block.

1.) In Inman Square in Cambridge, Massachusetts, side by side you had

**Jae’s Diner** – Motto – “Eat Here and Live Forever”

next door was

**East Coast Grill** – Motto – “Eat Here and Die Happy”
I don’t know who was there first. Jae’s is apparently gone now, though.
2.) When I lived in Salt Lake City on Fourth South near 7th East there were two Mexican fast food places literally next door to each other – a **Taco Bell** and a **Taco Time**.

I figured that whoever put up his restaurant second was bragging – “Oh, YEAH? Well, I’ll put one up next door to you and still do a brisk business!”

Here in Pittsburgh, there’s a shopping center with a Dunkin’ Donuts and a Dean Ornish diet center.

This isn’t “Odd” – it sort of makes more sense than any other mall I’ve seen, in a way
Eaton Place in Seabrook, NH is the Ultimate Guy Mall. It has:

– A Comic Book Store
– A Smoke Shop
– A Fireworks Store
– A Leather Goods store
– A Pawn Shop

and

– A Porno Store

Makes complete sense.

There’s no point in preaching to the saved. If you want converts, you’ve got to preach to the damned. 🙂

Houston definitely has lax zoning, in that it has none whatsoever. Years back, the Rice Village shopping center proudly offered a porn movie theater next to a toy store.

These days things in the Village are totally upscale and boutique-y. It’s a damn shame what’s happened to the place.

One of the banks in Pittsburgh used to have some shops in the basement. One was run by this little old lady who sold antiques and assault weapons. OK, picking up some Civil War era linens AND an Uzi at the same place was strange enough but doing it in a bank building just added to the strangeness.

Thirty odd years ago, my hometown had a fish & chip shop next to an aquarium shop. It even got featured in _Private Eye_, the British satirical magazine.

A few years back (can’t remember the town) I noticed a spiritualist church next to a funeral directors, which rather tickled me.

Durand Illinois used to have a combination funeral parlor/furniture store. Don’t know if it’s still there as I haven’t been in almost a decade, but I always got a chuckle out of the imagined conversations.

“We’re so sorry for your loss . . . have you considered a new sofa?”

Near where I live in Toronto there used to be a strip mall with a Quizno’s sub shop, a Mr. Sub sub shop, a sushi joint, and a Subway sub shop. I guess the sushi guy didn’t get the memo.

Out of the three sub shops, only the Subway is left. There can be only one…
