I was wandering around the Barnes & Nobles (Rt. 22 in Mountainside for all you Jersey people) yesterday when I came across a package of hot dogs on one of the bookshelves.

I can’t stop thinking about it - who walks through a bookstore and says “I bought these hotdogs but now I don’t want them. I know - I’ll take them to the bookstore and leave them there!”

Reality is just too strange sometimes.

When I was just a young, innocent thing, I used to work in a book store.

Every night when we were closing, it was my duty to straighten up the bathrooms. I kept finding copies of nudie magazines in the men’s room. It puzzled me to no end.

Finally, I talked to an older co-worker about it. “I know men like to read in the bathroom, but these magazines don’t really have very much text in them.”

My poor co-worker had to explain it to me. I wore two layers of gloves when I cleaned the men’s room after that.

The oddest thing we ever found was a set of dentures, wrapped neatly in a napkin, tucked into a shelf. No one ever came back to claim them. We speculated endlessly on how one can lose their _teeth_ and not realize it.

…someone… took a nudie magazine…off the shelf … in a BOOKSTORE… and went into the bathroom… to…

…

Man, some people just have too much class, you know?

Eesh.

Last night I saw a talking [Anne Coulter doll](http://www.thbookservice.com/BookPage.asp?prod_cd=c6230) for sale in a bookstore.

I used to work in a bookstore. Every day, we’d have to clean the nudie mags out of the little pull-down changing table in the handicapped stall. We even had a couple regulars develop, til I started lurking by the bathroom and chased them off.

Weirdest thing we ever found was two parakeets. Yes, the little birds. We had to get the people from the pet store to come take them, since we had no idea what to do with them. How do a couple parakeets wind up in a bookstore?

I found a $100 _outside_ a bookstore, once… I was supposed to be looking for work, but I was sitting around reading, instead. Went outside, and there was a bill on the ground; picked it up, and it was a $100. I took it around to all the stores in the area and asked if someone had lost it before pocketing it for myself. That was a very good day.
