Odd things I saw on the way to work today

A few years ago, on my way to work I saw an ostrich roaming across an open field, in the northern unit of the Kettle Moraine state park in Wisconsin. Another guy stopped to watch it too.

Maybe they’ve seen that commercial. Geico, is it?

The little critters I encounter are all like that, too. It’s almost a dare they have for us. It’s like they know we’ll swerve or slam on brakes or run into a tree or oncoming traffic to keep from hitting them. Devil spawn!

I’ve seen Alaska and Hawaii in Massachusetts but never Puerto Rico.

Reportedly, a couple horse farms here have zebras. I saw a flyer advertising them for sale in a food mart/gas station. So it must be true.

Were they $500?

Ha. I called an equine vet to see if they could tell me who had them, but they wouldn’t talk. I was dying to do a story on zebras.

Driving through Two Harbors, MN (on the shore of Lake Superior), I saw a middle-aged man standing among the headstones in the cemetery flying a kite. I always wanted to write a story about that.

I was driving on the interstate once with my nephew and all traffic in both directions was forced to stop and wait while a large herd of 3 to 6-foot tumbleweeds crossed. I can only assume they were on a cross-country trip from the Dakotas.

And we like to talk of human beings as some sort of dominant species.

I wonder if it was the one showed up in my sister’s front yard? His road trip ended with her-- she called an ostrich rancher (not the owner!) to come pick it up.

One of my cousins had Calif. plates in London. The company she worked for was willing to do anything to make her happy, including ship her vintage auto to the UK.

My favorite trip to work one morning was the paint spill. Huge splashes of different paints and tire tracks trailing colored tentacles on the asphalt for yards and yards. It was nicely surreal.
