O’Donnell would probably do a Palin and quit soon after she got elected. The press and people who don’t agree with them are just too mean . Then she could travel the country making speeches to right wing groups, becoming very wealthy. We could have 2 queen makers. What a great country. ---

I had a very similar experience a few years back when I was visiting my parents, who still lived where I grew up, and I ran into a woman I grew up with who happened to be back visiting her mom. We’re sitting down catching up, and she tells me she’s a school teacher now, and she “feels really bad for the colored kids, because they just can’t keep up, no matter how hard they try.” I don’t know if my jaw dropped physically as much as it did mentally, but the conversation didn’t get much past that. I grew up in a very white, mixed Irish and Polish blue collar neighborhood, and casual racism was part of the environment. I’m not entirely sure how I shed it and she didn’t, but she had no shyness at all about what she was saying, so she clearly expected me to understand and sympathize with her. Yuck. ---

My brother is running for office in Lower Alabama (L.A.) where there’s a very active Tea Party. Somebody in town keeps posting anonymous photocopied posters on his campaign signs and leaving them on cars and utility poles, etc., with a picture of Obama and the words ILLIGALS [sic] PRO CHOICE BLACK PANTHERS GREEN and other odd accusations. My brother looks a lot like Bill Clinton and he’s a nouveau riche businessman who if he to borrow a conceit of Steve Martin’s if he found a shirt he liked he’d go to every store in town to avoid buying it on sale- lives like the ultimate small town rich guy. It’s hysterical anybody would associate him with the black panthers. It is true he’s a liberal Democrat but he can’t stand Pelosi and has mixed views of Obama. His main complaint about the poster though was the word Green: “Hell’s bells, I don’t even friggin’ recycle!” Ironically he was initially against “Illigals” (assuming it’s a reference to illegal aliens and not to Illinois girls, who to my knowledge he has no strong opinions about one way or the other) but had to back off that one quick. He’s running from a very agricultural region and the farmers, most of whom are conservative, may talk a good game about ‘takin’ back Amer’ca’ but they make bigtime use of ‘illigals’ at harvest time and don’t want any legislation that will make them harder or, worse, more expensive to hire. Since the sign was so crudely done- literally the newest person on the night shift at the average Kinkos could do better- I did my part by Photoshopping it. If you’re going to smear a member of my family, by God do it like we smear each other- with panache and lots of color- not some anonymous snark a retarded third grader could outdo. I’ve blurred out my brother’s name and lowered resolution on his face for obvious reasons, but [The original](http://www.flickr.com/photos/28949748@N06/5107085362/) [My reimagining](http://www.flickr.com/photos/28949748@N06/5107078370/in/photostream/) (That’s an Illinois cheerleader on top of the gay guy for the “Illigals”; regrettably I added an erroneous comma and didn’t notice til after merging, but didn’t much feel like redoing it.) My sister is an avid tea partier when she’s not stalking a faith healing English evangelist (her newest hobby) and has said she’s delighted my brother’s not running for office from her district because “I couldn’t vote for him but I couldn’t vote against him so I’d have to not vote and now’s not a time to abstain”. At one point when discussing his candidacy I remarked “Well, to the best of my knowledge he doesn’t have any skeletons in his closet” to which she replied “That’s cause we’ve got unlisted numbers and Grandmother and Mama didn’t leave livin’ witnesses”. She absolutely loved my remake, ran off a high quality color copy and framed it (with a white background to make it fit the frame), but I don’t think it was completely the parody aspect that appealed to her. ---

[Some more crazy from the O’Donnell campaign](http://voices.washingtonpost.com/44/2010/10/odonnell-campaign-threatens-to.html?wpisrc=nl_pmpolitics). O’Donnell appeared on radio station WDEL, and took questions from listeners and the hosts. The session was also videotaped. After the session, one of the campaign workers requested the videotape, claiming the campaign had not agreed to videotaping. O’Donnell herself supposedly told the host of the program that she would sue the station if they didn’t turn over the video. Matt Moran, O’Donnell’s campaign manager, called the station later and threatened to “crush WDEL” unless they turned over the video. It seems that someone from the campaign eventually talked to a lawyer, who advised them to STFU – after apologizing to the station for making baseless threats. ---

I suspect she didn’t like the video because it showed her first snapping her fingers to call her assistant/bodyguard over to her side and then touching his arm and pushing him forward toward the show host a little bit as if to spur him into some kind of action. That move was inappropriate because she was pushing the guard (?) toward the interviewer, and what is the guard supposed to do at this point? ---

That’s not a guard. It’s an advisor/spokesman or campaign manager or somesuch. ---
