> I deal with this shit in my workplace all the time. I work in an office (a.k.a. “cube farm”), so there are lots of little aisles and plenty of intersections. It gripes the hell out of me when two or more co-workers stand in the middle of a narrow high-traffic aisle that I must use to get to my desk. When I approach sometimes they glare at me as if somehow I’m intruding on “their” space when I’m just trying to get through.

One time at work, I was backed into by a woman who was in the leg part of a “T” intersection while yakking with the cube-dwellers there. She acted like it was my fault because she didn’t hear an “excuse me” from me. Sorry, no, not my fault if you can’t be bothered to stop yamming long enough to hear me repeatedly indicate that I want to get past you. I thought she _had_ heard me because she moved off a bit before baking up.

So County, do you belive that Mr. Obstruction was important enough to present a safety hazard? Remember the OP mentioned that he was being burnt by the hot dishes that he was carrying.

I see your role as the defender of Assholes. Lobsang is right, it seems that every time you pop your head into a thread, it is to defend one sort of assholish behavior or another.

Being an obstruction or thinking that you are so important that rules of comon courtesy don't apply is unacceptable. County may not understand this, but the rest of us do.

Well, I see myself as someone who recognizes reality and you as someone who, well, can’t seem to distinguish a fact from an opinion.

See, I recognize the guy standing in the way is an asshole. And I figure that the guy who posted the OP has to deal with it, so I suggest patience and tolerance.
(Which are both good character traits to have or develop)

Now why don’t you carry your ass down to the restaurant and tell the guy standing in the way that his conduct is “unacceptable,” because the OP will lose his livelihood if he does.

And, since I have only a limited supply of patience and tolerance, why don’t you,
if you want to, bite me.

Not having worked in a kitchen I can’t commiserate with those experiences but as for people doing annoying things, I’ll share another which I finally could not take any more: People who start to get on an elevator and then hold it open to finish a conversation. As late as my early 20’s I could tolerate such behavior and “grin and bear it” but no more. One day a person did this so blatantly that I finally cracked and started shouting "Get on or get off!!” He was holding the doors open while he finished it for a good couple of minutes. He even apologized about it to us while he was doing it. If you know what you are doing is bad enough that it merits an apology, why continue doing it?

Some people mellow toward these things with age but I’ve become worse. Besides bitching at people for holding up the elevator, I also tend to go off on people who leave their cart in the middle of the grocery store aisle. My wife cringes and says I’m going to get killed but I’m not worried. I can think of no nobler cause to die for than letting people know just how clueless and inconsiderate they are.

Not so much in the workplace, although I feel your pain, but in normal everyday situations.

I live in Las Vegas and in casinos, with 100,000 square feet of space, it never fails that the fattest family on earth will all congregate at the one little aisle leading out from elevators or at the top of an escalator. You can scream “excuse me” 30 times and they won’t budge. They feel the world is theirs, and everybody else has a supporting cast role.

The other fun folks are those with shopping carts in supermarkets that are sideways as they stand bent over and blocking the entire aisle. They don’t give a shit about anybody else trying to get through the aisle, so I usually don’t give a shit about shoving their cart five feed down the aisle.

I don’t know…I just learned at at early age to be aware of my surroundings. Maybe it is street smarts, maybe it is common courtesy, but I just don’t understand planting your ass somewhere that is going to block access to other people passing by.

My husband does this. No matter how many times I’ve told him “You’re blocking the aisle” or “This (woman, man) wants to get through and can’t because you’ve blocked the aisle AGAIN” he WILL place his cart wherever it will cause the most inconvenience to other people. And he’ll keep doing this, every time he stops his cart. He has similar inconsiderate behaviors at home…for instance, he persists in putting stuff that I need out of my reach. Since I cannot use a stepstool or anything similar (I have balance problems, and I WILL fall down), this means that I can’t get stuff.

I need to get one of those remote control electric dog collars and make him wear it, because I swear that nothing else will work. I’m not sure that the collar will work, either, but at least _I_ will happier about the situation.
