> You mean the one where a British comedian impersonates a parody of a ranting neocon? That one? The one you thought was a real person spouting real points of view?

You should probably see his other clips. He is certainly not impersonating a neo-con.

[For example, on Trump’s inauguration](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0RMwjaZouNY).

For some reason, I thought this guy was more well known. The clip in the OP I saw in November, right after the election. His Brexit work was phenomenal.

The guy is fucking hilarious and has provided much needed stress relief after this election.

Sorry, I shouldn’t minimize it by just saying it’s “fucking hilarious.” It is funny, but there is serious social/political commentary in it, with plenty of blame thrown around everywhere. But the guy is a pretty strong leftist (or at least the character he presents is–it’s definitely _not_ neo-con or right-wing, more like leftist populist), from what I gather having watched most of his work.

OTOH, **pulykamell** , the American public opinion spectrum is so badly dopplered to the right that an honest to goodness “strong leftist” may be hard to parse for many in the US.

> Can’t help you, mate. I was proud to vote for Hillary Clinton. I’ve examined her background and her record and I saw a lot that I liked. Far more than I could ever see in Donald Trump.

Er, yes; I’m sure that’s true.

And I’m sure there are Trump voters who’d reply that way about their candidate; but they’re not the point of the thread. It’s the Trump voters who reply as I would about Hillary Clinton – _I, uh, voted for the less bad candidate, and will tell you why by pretty much just criticizing what I disliked about the worse one_ – who I figure are (a) the point of this thread, and (b) like _me,_ not you, in a mirror darkly.

> So tell me, how effective were those insults from the right in getting you to change your mind? Did they harden your position or make you reconsider? How effective is insult and labeling and tactic for recruitment?

But this isn’t about “recruitment” or debate or discussion or any of the things that we do when talking with responsible grownups.

This is about the thoroughly contemptible and spineless position that **it’s somehow the responsibility of liberals to defer to and coddle conservatives’ feelings _in order to deter them from making stupid and reckless electoral choices that even they themselves aren’t happy with, merely out of spite and resentment at liberals for not having coddled their feelings enough_**.

That is not an attitude worthy of anybody eligible to vote in a democracy, and I think well-meaning liberals are ultimately not doing conservatives or anybody else any favors by caving in to it and breastbeating about how we need to change in the future to save conservative voters from a recurrence of behaving like spiteful unhinged toddlers in their electoral choices.

My point about the decades of conservative anti-liberal name-calling is not whether it did or didn’t change my mind about any particular issue, but simply that **I never felt that I was entitled to behave like a spiteful unhinged toddler in my electoral choices merely to get back at conservatives for saying those mean things to me.**

It’s my job as a citizen to make the best electoral choices I can for my country in accordance with my principles, no matter what mean things my political adversaries may be saying to me. I’m frankly appalled at the idea that any self-respecting conservative wouldn’t feel the same way.

As far as debate and discussion goes, I’m happy to talk seriously and temperately about political issues with any conservative who wants to have a serious discussion (as the conservatives on this board well know). That’s not excepting conservatives who voted for Trump because they made a considered judgement that he was the candidate they genuinely wanted, or at least genuinely wanted enough to justify putting him in office. I have nothing against conservatives of that persuasion. I have serious **disagreements** with them, obviously, but I don’t hold it against them that they deliberately supported and voted for the candidate they sincerely preferred, as responsible adults in a democracy are supposed to do.
But conservatives who come around whining and grousing that the Trump Presidency is all the fault of the mean old liberals who “made” conservatives vote for him out of spite, because their poor feelings were so hurt by liberals not sufficiently “respecting” them? :dubious: I’mma mock that crybaby shit **all** day long.

In the spirit of this forum, I want to declare that “Trump won because he’s a centrist”. The a piece somewhere on WaPo looking at the countries that flipped from 2008 to 2012 to 2016, and is hard to see how “racism” is a valid response as to why Trump won.

While you may not have had strong reasons for voting for clinton other than her opposition, there are many, including myself, who had positive reasons to vote for her, and would defend the vote with much more than “not trump.”

I have not seen this on the other side.

So they go for the doctor pushing the clinical trials or even the outright huckster because he’s the only one giving them hope.

Less like cancer, and more like dismemberment, unless you are saying that you thought Clinton was going to euthanize our country.

You go into the doctor with a crushed leg that’s turning gangrenous, the doc says, “We’re gonna have to lose that leg. But we have many prosthetics and other aides to hook you up with. You’ll be up and mobile and active in no time.”

But you just keep repeating to yourself, “gonna lose the leg”, “gonna lose the leg”, while ignoring the part of the doctor’s advice that tells how your life may actually be better than it was, what with your new prosthetic.

Guy out in the alley behind the doctor’s office looks in through the window, and says, “Hey, I can fix that! I can make it the best leg ever!” and starts pulling out some rusty saws and screwdrivers.

Doc says, “No, he doesn’t know what he’s doing, he’ll end up making it worse, or even killing you.”

But you don’t care, the doc said he wanted to take your leg off, and this guy says he can save it.

That’s all that matters.

I could go on and on about how bad the other choice (Trump was), but I could also go on about how good I thought Clinton was. I am not going to bother at this point, because the campaign is over, listing her accomplishments won’t get her any more votes. But, if interested, go check out her wiki page.

No, I don’t see how casting a “lesser of two evils” vote in and of itself is in any way shifting the responsibility for your vote onto your opponents. That goes for lukewarm Trumpists who were saying “Well, at least he’s not Hillary” as well as for you.

Everybody knows that all candidates are flawed in a variety of ways that are viewed differently by different voters, and that one voter’s meat is another voter’s poison. We’re never voting solely to put our own candidate in; we’re also voting to keep the other side’s candidate out (except in unopposed elections, natch). And the worse we think the other side’s candidate is, the easier it becomes to feel strongly committed to our own candidate, flaws and all.

Now, if you had voted for a candidate whom you **didn’t** genuinely consider the least of the evils currently on offer, out of sheer malicious resentment because you felt conservatives weren’t “respecting” you enough and you wanted to “shake things up” in a way that would hurt and dismay them, regardless of all other consequences, and then tried to blame conservatives for those other consequences when they eventually materialized…

… **then** you would be an immature, irresponsible, petty drama llama who stands in sore need of hearty ridicule and possibly even a court-appointed guardian to help him cope with the burdens of autonomous adulthood.

But I’m betting that that’s not what you did.

You are getting the wrong message from what we’re saying. What we’re saying is that you’ve created an environment in this country where every viewpoint not your own is insulted and shouted down. Like Pie said, there’s no possibility of debate or reasoned discussion. And that’s the way you want it. You’re right and that’s all there is to it. Should anyone disagree, it’s because they’re some form of asshole.

> [@Kimstu](#):
>
> My point about the decades of conservative anti-liberal name-calling is not whether it did or didn’t change my mind about any particular issue, but simply that **I never felt that I was entitled to behave like a spiteful unhinged toddler in my electoral choices merely to get back at conservatives for saying those mean things to me.**

The difference is that the conservative anti-liberal name-callers were mostly in the minority and they had very little impact on the direction the country took. They also faded away as time went by, rather than growing stronger and more militant by the day. The insulting and intransigent behavior coming from the left however is ubiquitous and growing by the day. Schools, Hollywood, the news media, and liberals everywhere amongst the populace promote the idea every day that conservatives are mean, hateful and evil people. Either that or they’re morons.

The reason for this is obvious to those who’ve observed how social revolution has been accomplished in the past. To get people whipped up and passionate enough to vote or behave the way you want, it’s first necessary to get them angry enough to do so. Thus the practice of portraying everything about your opponents in such a way as to make them look mean, hateful, exploitative, etc. Another motive is that such behavior keeps you from having to defend your positions from challenge. It’s much easier to insult, shout down and condemn your opponents than it is to debate the finer points of whatever societal or legislative change you want to accomplish. And given that most people apparently are loathe to confront this kind of behavior face to face, they largely remain quiet and allow it to go on…and to grow more strident and insistent every day.

I’ve always been both amazed and confounded by people’s apparent fear of being called names. It’s the very foundation that political correctness and has been amazingly effective. Up to now, that is, when it’s become so obnoxious and so unyielding and so pervasive that it’s become its own worst enemy and is creating exactly the opposite of what it wants. Society today is a teeming hornets’ nest of people and groups hating and turning on each other. Liberals nowadays aren’t even safe from each other, as the uproar over Ellen Degeneres’s jumping on Usain Bolt’s back or Steve Martin’s comments about having found Carrie Fisher beautiful, and there seems to be no end to the number of things people on the left are able to find offensive.

And just like with the election, much of this is ultimately having opposite the desired effect. An example would be in regard to race, where once the country’s liberals were striving to achieve racial equality and integration, they’ve gone completely off the rails and created issues like ‘cultural appropriation’ instead, where if you’re not a certain race you can’t play this part in a movie or play, or you can’t wear a certain hairstyle, create or perform a certain style of music, or talk or dress in a certain way.

The result of all this is that the country is now a seething mass of people hating each other in a thousand different ways and for a thousand different reasons. And like the saying goes, ‘We the people have had enough of this shit’. And so we the people elected Donald Trump, the only candidate running who had the guts to tell political correctness and all its demands to go pound sand. And we elected a Republican House and a Republican Senate and turned the direction of the Supreme Court over to the Republicans. It’s worth noting that the majority of state governorships are Republican too. In short, things could not possibly be worse for those on the left right now, and what I’m hearing from you and other outspoken proponents of leftist politics is that you fully intend to keep doing the same thing that brought you to this point to begin with.

Well, sucks to be you is all I can say. The reason I and other people on the right are trying to point all this out to you isn’t because we’re complaining, it’s because despite the fact we now hold all the reins of power we still think it’s best if government is a function of reasoned debate and compromise rather than who wields the largest hammer to beat down its opponents. So we’d like to see you knock it off with all the insults and name calling and your my-way-or-the-highway-and-if-the-highway-you’re-an-asshole stance on the issues.

It’s a mystery to me what gave you that idea, as that is precisely what conservatives did in the last election. We voted in accordance with our principles despite the insults and condemnation coming from your side. But had your side been less strident and insulting and demanding, it’s likely we’d have been more open to your arguments (should they even been made, that is) and things might not have ended up as lopsided as they did. Who knows, you might even have won the election yourselves.

> [@Kimstu](#):
>
> As far as debate and discussion goes, I’m happy to talk seriously and temperately about political issues with any conservative who wants to have a serious discussion (as the conservatives on this board well know).

That’s all well and good. The problem is that as far as the national dialog goes, you are very much in the minority. So much so as to be invisible as a matter of fact.

> [@Kimstu](#):
>
> But conservatives who come around whining and grousing that the Trump Presidency is all the fault of the mean old liberals who “made” conservatives vote for him out of spite…

Again you completely miss the point. No one is ‘complaining’ that liberals made them vote Republican. What they’re saying is that they’d prefer a society in which social and political issues were determined by reasoned debate and discussion, the results of which occur naturally and organically with the passage of time, instead of one in which discussion and debate don’t exist and one side is endlessly trying to hammer the other side into submission.

> [@Kimstu](#):
>
> because their poor feelings were so hurt by liberals not sufficiently “respecting” them? :dubious: I’mma mock that crybaby shit **all** day long.

And here again you almost seem to be parodying yourself…or at least your political brethren. Mock it and call it crybaby shit all you want, but you have just disproved your own willingness to discuss the issue and demonstrated that you intend to keep on doing what you’ve done in the past while expecting a different result.

Reading a transcript would take longer than watching the video, it’s just that content heavy. Take the time to watch the video. It’s worth it.

> That guy is not a rightie. Seriously, did you click on the links to any of his other stuff? He’s a progressive with a populist bent–would fit in with Bernie types.

Yeah, I erred in comparing him to Steven Colbert. Jon Stewart or John Oliver would have been a better example.

They’re being told that they’ve been going about things in the wrong way and it’s not what they want to hear. So they write him off as a right-winger and continue on their merry way.

I hope this was intended to say “We voted against our principles…”

Because I’m not sure what sort of principles support voting for a lying, fraudulent, unintelligent, uninformed, sexual predator

And that is why we never have any meaningful discussions across the aisle, because any form of disagreement is shouted down and insulted?

Well, we do in fact have meaningful discussions across the aisle. I am not sure that I agree with your thesis.

Now, is there screaming across the isle, from both sides? Sure. Does everyone engage in it? Not really.

So, if the only people that you are willing to engage with, are the people that you are screaming at, and are screaming back at you, then you are going to see the discussion work out that way.

The problem is, is that there are quite a number of people in the middle trying to have a discussion, and we have you screaming at us about what some other guy over there said to you.

You then want us to police every single person on our side that may cause you any sort of discomfort, that may say something that makes you feel hurt, and make sure that when you call them names or threaten their rights, they don’t respond in any way that could possibly infringe on your right to keep disrespecting their rights.

☹ :o **octopus** , I’m heartily shamed and embarrassed to find that you think my post which you quoted was phrased “politely”. It was not my intention to be polite at all in that post, and it’s mortifying to learn that it seems to have happened in spite of me. Sorry about that!
