Official Manor House thread

Count me among the sniffers. I was OK while the Family left, but when the Servants began leaving was when the fountain turned on. I waved at Edgar.

Those films were frikkin’ hilarious. We laughed as hard as the Servants! The family’s film was downright lame-o compared to the sight gags in the Servants films. The look on Mr.E’s face as Kenny and Rob dragged him and locked him in the cubbord was a hoot. Antonia’s chicken plucking was great. The Maid chacing around with brooms. It felt downright turn-of-the-centuary. I hope they gave copies to everyone. What a treat.

I take back what I said about the Chef being creepy.(He still looks like an evil H.Potter.)I am now a fan of Chef D!Apparently he came to the house to “Rediscover Edwardian cooking technique” What dedication to a job! Nay, a passion I share. Getting out of bed with the flu to be sure the curry was right, and the throw down for the Empire party. My mind is changed. Does anyone remember his http? I know that the narator mention it.

Speaking of narators. I do love me some Derrick Jacobi. What a treat for those of us who know him best as Brother Cadfael. Knight that man already :stuck_out_tongue:

That Tutor, good looking or not sure was a bit of an ass was he not? Yup, I agree his apology and grattitude seemed a bit rehearsed. The Footman took it right in stride with a lovely smile.

It dosn’t suprise me that K&E spit up quickly when the misery that held them together passed. But Miss A’s 18 month period is a bit too much. (Though no less telling than Ma and Pa Glenn’s seperation after Frontier House) How’d the L&L fair afterward? The Upstairs Servants let us know their domestic situation was lacking a bit.

My favorite still is Mr. Edgar. (I still want that T) When he saw Kenny and Ellen in bed together the last night in the house, I expected Edgar to stay in character and give them both what for, but the Maid walked in and it turned into a laughfest. Boy, that was nice seeing that man smile and laugh.

Kudos to Rebecca, Rob, Antonia and the Maid(Who’s name I can’t remember but was the one with Mr.E and K&E) For keeping with it as well as being funny and gracious for the cameras. Good Luck to you all.

I’m looking forward to the next “House” Channel 4 sends our way. Any clues out there what it may be?

Did anyone else cringe when Chef in was in bed? For some reason I noticed how filthy his fingernails were and I was glad he wasn’t in the kitchen.

I still have to hand it to him…turning out those multiple course fancy meals on 1906 appliances all by himself. Wow.

Here is the Chef’s website, for all interested. …I cringed when he got out of bed and touched all the food in the kitchen!

TelcontarStorm, you’ll be happy to know that our beloved Derek Jacobi (I’m a big Cadfael fan, too) was knighted in 1994.

I read somewhere that the next “house” will be one here in the US. Colonial House or something, set in like 1638. No cite sorry - I forget where I read it.

I found it odd how the year changed. That was a departure from the other Houses, for them to go forward in time more than a decade, during the 3 months.

Tutor was deeply creepy while talking to Charlie. Yuck.

The ladies maid did turn into a looker, and se had a beautiful coat on. I can see why she enjoyed the clothing so much. She was a bit of a weeper though.

I found though, during this House more so than all the others, that there was a lot of discussion of the process and what would an Edwardian really have done. I’m certain that the house members didn’t spend all their time talking about it. It has to be the editing. But it got tiresome hearing about the hirearchy over and over and over. Ok already, now lets just watch them live please? Especially compared to Frontier House, which was much less about the social structure.

Speaking of editing, I just loved the editing at the end, switching everyone back to 2001 clothing. I thought it was really effectively done.

Overall the show was very very enjoyable. Now, onto Warrior Challenge!

I do wish he didn’t feel compelled to give us constant, graphic updates on his diarrhea . . . “Mah stool ees hard, so eet’s okay.” Thank you.

Oh looking at the chef’s webiste I found my way to the next House they are doing in the UK. Regency House Party:

“For three months you have the opportunity to travel back and live the splendour of stately life of the early 1800s, discovering everything the author of Pride and Prejudice did, and didn’t dare talk about.”

Adultered food! Smallpox! Yellow fever! No air conditioning or bug spray! Transporsation or hanging for stealing a loaf of bread to feed your 18 starving children!

Count me in!

Yes, the tutor’s affected manner was a bit much. I think he was channelling Dickens’ “Uriah Heep” character… yecch!

I think it’s interesting that just about everyone in this thread has almost the same impressions of the various people – I’ve been reading and saying “yep, I thought the tutor was a freak (and my good lord above, he said that the servants were racist right in front of them, I might have broken character for that and thrown some food at him)” and “yep, that maid was sure weepy, although she cleaned up nice at the end” etc etc. During the Frontier House thread, there were a lot of opposing opinions about the people and families.

I wonder if the servants were trying not to laugh at the family’s tears as they said good-bye. The servants were probably thinking “good bye and GOOD RIDDANCE.” I know I certainly was. The servants last interactions with each other were very touching, though, and I think they can all be very proud that they stuck it out and accomplished so much.

I just about died when Lady Whatsit was saying that things were not equal enough in Edwardian times, but perhaps they were TOO EQUAL now. (I wish I could remember the exact quote, but that was the gist of it.) Cry me a river!

I was hoping that the producers would make the family and servants change places for the last day, I think the family could have used a taste of their own medicine.

Well I thought the female servant who got together with Kenny was quite the cutie.

Quite right, Eve, quite right. Noblesse oblige

Actually I gave much the same sorts of answers as you appear to have, and scored similarly.
