In Spanish it also means “superb”, it probably started in sarcasm but most people would go for the “superb” meaning and don’t realize the relationship with “barbarian”. ---

I’ve run across some funny names in my life. Precious Blue-Eyes Jones is one that stands out. And I remember talking, way back when, with the guy that headed up the project for converting the Texas driver records to computer format. They put in logic checks for various things. One of them was that names had to be all letters. Imagine their surprise when the computer kicked out several people whose legal first name was T9C. ---

And we describe someone who only calls when he wants to ask for something as being “someone who only remembers Saint Barbara when there’s thunder” (_sólo se acuerda de Santa Bárbara cuando truena_). ---
